People who rely on coffee to kick-start their day would be no more alert if they had no caffeine at all, research has found.
A new UK-based study challenges the popular belief that coffee acts as a stimulant for regular drinkers.
Instead, say the researchers, a morning coffee only offsets symptoms of caffeine withdrawal that have built up overnight.
"Although frequent consumers feel alerted by caffeine ... evidence suggests that this is actually merely the reversal of the fatiguing effects of acute caffeine withdrawal," said Professor Peter Rogers, of Bristol University, and colleagues...
