Bishop, USCCB oppose Vanderbilt’s nondiscrimination policy

(Catholic World News) Anthony Picarello, general counsel of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has joined Bishop David Choby of Nashville and Vanderbilt University chaplain Father John Sims Baker in opposing Vanderbilt University’s proposal to apply its nondiscrimination policy to student religious organizations. Under the policy, a Catholic student organization would be guilty of discrimination if it required its leaders to be Catholic.

Catholic students held a Rosary novena ahead of a university board of trustee meeting in an effort to prevent the implementation of the policy. The trustee meeting concluded November 12, but as of the following day the university had not announced the board’s decision in the matter.
