White House: Aborting a Baby Because It's a Girl Part of 'A Very Personal and Private Decision'

(CNSNews.com) – The White House is opposed to a bill that was proposed in the House that would ban sex-selection abortions.

In defending President Obama's opposition to the bill, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said it would force abortionists into the position of trying to determine the "motivations" behind a "very personal" decision.

During the White House press briefing Wednesday, Fox News reporter Ed Henry asked, “since the president has been outspoken about being against gender-based discrimination, how can you allow gender-based abortion?”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney responded that President Obama is against discrimination in all forms, but the legislation under consideration would penalize doctors.

“Well, Ed, the administration opposes gender discrimination in all forms,” Carney said. “But the end result of this legislation would be to subject doctors to criminal prosecution if they fail to determine the motivations behind a very personal and private decision. I think we, again, oppose gender discrimination in all cases. I think our record on that is very clear. The president’s record on that is very clear.

“But the purpose of this legislation – or the result of this legislation would be to subject doctors to criminal prosecution for failing to divine the motivations of their patients when it comes to a very personal and medical decision,” Carney said.

The Parental Non-Discrimination Act would make abortions based on a baby’s gender illegal by creating a penalty for those who knowingly have gender-selective abortions, coerce a woman into having one, or provide transportation to a woman so she can come to the U.S. to have a gender-selective abortion.

The bill was defeated in the House Thursday in a 246 to 168 vote, because it failed to get a two-thirds majority.

Henry followed, “To figure out how to get to the bottom of this – because when the one-child policy in communist China comes up, people of all political stripes in this country are outraged that girls are killed, essentially. How can that happen in this country?”

Carney stuck with his original statement.

“Again, Ed, we oppose gender discrimination in all its forms – in all its forms, and we don’t selectively pursue legislation in order to achieve other ideological goals,” Carney said. “We oppose it in all its forms. This piece of legislation would have the hopefully unintended consequence of criminalizing a failure by a doctor and prosecuting a doctor for criminal behavior if he or she were somehow to fail to intuit the motivations of a patient in making a very private medical decision.”

Boston College, Cardinal O'Malley, & Victoria Kennedy Protest Sends a Message

From Operation Rescue: Boston, h/t to Carol at The Tenth Crusade:

Pro-lifers from Operation Rescue: Boston and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts lined the sidewalk outside of the entrance to The Conte Forum at Boston College. Our protest was directed primarily at Boston College, for honoring Victoria Kennedy, and at Cardinal O'Malley for not exercising his authority in this matter; only secondarily at Victoria Kennedy herself.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C.J. Doyle offered an incisive assessment of the matter: "BC Law's choice of Mrs. Kennedy as a commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient [BC Law stated that they no longer confer honorary degrees; as if that excuses them] clearly contravenes the 2004 statement by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which prohibits Catholic institutions from providing awards, platforms or honors to those who repudiate fundamental Catholic moral teaching. The message BC Law is sending to future attorneys, legislators, and judges is one of indifference and infidelity to Catholic teaching about the sanctity of innocent human life from conception to natural death.

"No rational person can reasonably be expected to take Catholic opposition to abortion seriously when a prominent Catholic institution honors a pro-abortion celebrity in an archdiocese presided over by the Chairman of the USCCB's Committee on Pro-Life Activities. Sadly, that archbishop, unlike his suffragan in Worcester, has remained silent on this issue. Faithful, pro-life Catholics should not be constantly forced to fight a two front war, against a culture of death in secular society, and against a culture of betrayal in their own church."
We got some press coverage from the AP and The Boston Globe. The Globe reporter said another article is in the pipeline for tomorrow.

Saudis Demand McDonald’s Be Punished For Happy Meal Toy That Insults Muhammed

http://www.inquisitr.com/wp-content/2012/05/41057_4_13381111091.jpg(The Inquisitr) The people of Saudi Arabia are furious with the McDonald’s fast food chain for a toy which they say desecrates the name of Muhammed, the prophet of Islam. They are demanding retribution.

According to the Arabic news website, Kermalkom.com,
“[the McDonald's fast food restaurant] abused the Prophet Muhammad by placing his name at the base of a toy that is being distributed as part of the Happy Meal, a toy which steps on the name ‘Muhammad.’”
The toy is a blue super hero on a blue base.  The toy looks like a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger samurai warrior. The toy stand on one of its legs and the other leg hangs over the side of the base.  When a lever is pressed the toy’s other leg smahes against the base of the toy in a stomping motion.

The Saudis are claiming that the base of the toy, where it stomps its foot, is covered with the name Muhammed.  They claim the name is written several times in circles all over the base so every time it stomps it is stomping on Muhammed.

The toy had been distributed for several days and until today no one had noticed the name written on the base of the toy.  After its discovery by Saudi Muslim authorities they lunched several campaigns against the restaurant “in response to the savage attacks on the noble prophet”.  The campaigns were called “Help your Prophet” and “Together in support of the Prophet.”

In response, “Saudi McDonald’s” has taken the toy out of circulation at all of its restaurants stating it was important, “to safeguard against any accusations or misunderstandings.”

Here Rests in Honored Glory - The Mass and the Tomb of the Unknowns

By Ann Barnhardt at Barnhardt.biz

HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD.

Those are the words engraved on the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. Here is a video of the Changing of the Guard.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v5ydhY5-av0/T4zs93qAPsI/AAAAAAAADso/-UU_GQ-DQIw/s1600/Ann-Barnhardt.jpg
I think we can all agree that the Tomb of the Unknowns, the 24/7 guarding of the Tomb, and the intense precision of the ceremonial rubrics are one of the most excellent things in American culture. The old saying goes, "You may judge a nation by how it treats its fallen warriors." In an otherwise degraded and despair-inducing society, the Tomb of the Unknowns is a beacon of cultural light and hope.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is also extremely instructive, and believe it or not, it instructs us about . . . the Mass. The reason the Tomb of the Unknowns instructs us today about the Mass is because the Tomb of the Unknowns rubrics originally came FROM the Mass. For those of you who have never seen a pre-1968 Tridentine Mass and are used to the clownish, degraded, irreverent Novus Ordo Masses of the last 45 years, or of Superfun Rockband church, I hope the sense of reverent awe and solemnity you feel when watching the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns helps you understand what exactly it is that has been robbed from you.

After watching the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns above, I want you to imagine the guards walking about casually, maybe wearing a partial uniform jacket, but with jeans and sandals. Imagine the guards walking out and introducing themselves, "Hi, my name is Lieutenant Jones, but you can call me Jake." Then the guard might say something like, "Isn't it a beautiful day today? It sure was rainy yesterday. I had to wear a rain jacket. I'm so glad you all could make to my shift today. I'm going to be guarding the tomb for the next few hours, and I know that it can sure get BOOOORING! That's why I have asked a local band to come in and play some music for you guys, because I want this to be A FUN EXPERIENCE for all of us!"

If this happened, you would be shocked and disgusted, right? Do you understand that what I have just described is a watered-down comparison of what has happened to the Mass? The Mass went from being even more reverent than the rubrics of the Tomb Guard to what I just described above - and many times even worse than what I described above.

Let's walk through some of the many parallels.

The soldiers are in full dress uniform, meticulously turned-out and maintained. They are not in combat gear that soldiers would use to walk a patrol in Afghanistan. The Tomb guards are doing something DIFFERENT, and thus their uniforms reflect that. Really, what the ceremonies surrounding the Tomb are is the highest form of ART. It is living ART, not consisting of a mere two-dimensional representation, not consisting of inanimate objects, but ART consisting of human beings in action. The uniforms, the gait, the precise rubrics, words, gestures and movements - these all combine into a perpetual work of art that not only moves and inspires the people who witness it, but also accomplishes the goal of making tangible a RESPECT for and a REMEMBRANCE of all of the fallen unknown soldiers. The Tomb Guards walk their patrol whether anyone is there to see them do it or not. It isn't a show. It is a service. It is a liturgy.

Here Rests in Honored Glory . . . Part 2

Posted by Ann Barnhardt - May 28, AD 2012 12:09 PM MST

The Mass is exactly what I just described, except that the Mass is the most perfect artistic action in the universe because the Mass is the artistic creation of God Himself. The Holy Spirit taught the Church the Mass. The Mass is art that is so perfect that it actually causes something to happen - it causes Heaven and Earth to touch, it causes time to be bent such that the moment of "now" touches and intersects with the moment of Calvary 1979 years ago, and it causes bread and wine to be transubstantiated into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, made PHYSICALLY PRESENT. Man calls down God, and God, in His infinite love, responds and fully submits in complete love, making Himself present on the Altar both at the moment of His death, and in His resurrection, so that He may go into us physically as Food.

In the Tridentine Mass, the priest observes "custody of the eyes", never looking around and NEVER looking out at the people. Like the guards, priests are supposed to keep their eyes on exactly what they are doing without distraction. The Guards at the Tomb wear mirrored sunglasses to block out all eye contact. Priests are supposed to keep their eyes DOWN or CLOSED, with a couple of exceptions such as just before the consecration when they are to look up to Heaven. This is like the Guards' rubric of looking from side-to-side very deliberately when inspecting the rifle and the relieving officer. Did you catch that?

Priests are also supposed to walk with a very deliberate gait - slow, measured and reverent in exactly the same way the Tomb Guards walk in a slow, deliberate, reverent gait.

Priests are only supposed to say very specific words - no improvisation, no modifications. The Guards are the same way. They have a very strict announcement that they make at the changing, and they have very strict words that they say when telling people to be quiet and observe reverent silence (there is a YouTube video of that happening, look it up.) There is no chatting or extemporaneous speech. In the Church, the command is "Say the black, do the red," in reference to the layout of the Roman Missal with the words of prayer in black and the instructions for the intensely precise rubrics, down to every gesture, in red.

I would analogize the exaggerated heel-clicking movement that the Guards do to the genuflecting of the Priest (and servers, and laity, ahem) to the rubric of ALWAYS genuflecting to the right knee EACH AND EVERY TIME the axis of the Tabernacle is crossed. In many Catholic Churches, the Tabernacle, which is the center of the Church - heck, it is the center of the universe - has been moved off to the side, or even hidden in a sacristy. Where a Tabernacle is present, Our Lord, physically present inside, is largely ignored. I have never seen a Novus Ordo priest consistently observe the loving rubric of genuflecting to the Tabernacle every time the plane is crossed. In fact, most Novus Ordo priests wander around the sanctuary with their backs turned to the Tabernacle while they put on their "performance." This would be analogous to the Tomb itself at Arlington being moved "out of the way" and instead a stage being erected upon which the Guards would perform. It makes you sick to think of that happening at Arlington - but that is largely what has happened to the Mass.

There is even an analogue in the Changing of the Guard ceremony to the Consecration of the Host in the Mass. Did you hear it when you watched the video above? It comes at the 2:36 mark. A rifle is fired, its report thus commemorating the moment of death of the Unknowns. In the Mass, the moment of consecration and transubstantiation are the report of Christ's words spoken by the priest:

HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM.

(This is My Body.)

Finally, the words engraved on the Tomb of the Unknowns:

HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD

This is analogous to the words of the Mass:

ECCE AGNUS DEI, ECCE QUI TOLLIT PECCATA MUNDI.

(Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world.)

In the Mass, Christ is alive, physically present in the Eucharist, veiled under the mere appearance of bread and wine. At the Tomb, the Unknowns remain dead - only their memory, veiled in anonymity, is honored and made present.

The point is this: if we all know and understand and FEEL the power of the excellent, excellent ceremonial rubrics of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, if we understand the power of "living art", and we understand how important the concepts of reverence, solemnity, precision, dignity and beauty in movement and action are in the context of the Tomb, why, oh why, do we continue to tolerate the lack of reverence, the lack of solemnity, the absence of liturgical precision and dignity and the resulting UGLINESS that has been unleashed on the Mass, which is not just a mere memorial of Calvary, but is Calvary Itself, physically present, and Our Resurrected Lord physically present?

The Tomb of the Unknowns merits the excellent, beautiful, solemn, reverent, disciplined ceremony of the Guards.

Our Lord, Crucified, Risen and physically present to us deserves INFINITELY MORE excellence, beauty, solemnity, reverence, discipline and dignity in His Mass.

Demand it. Now.

France: Muslims stone Christians in church during mass

From Supertradmum at Etheldredasplace:
No one will take much note of this. It is just one story among the thousands that together tell the tale of France's decline and Islamization. Eurabia Update: Here is my translation of "Carcassonne Des fidèles caillassés pendant la messe à Saint-Joseph," by Yannick Bonnefoy in Midi Libre, May 27 (thanks to David):

Carcassonne: The faithful stoned during Mass at St. Joseph

Yesterday at 6:20PM, as Fr. Roger Barthes began to celebrate mass, four youths, aged 14 to 18, broke into the Church of St. Joseph, before launching handfuls of pebbles at 150 faithful present at the service. Immediately, men began pursuing the young troublemakers, but in vain. They managed to vanish into thin air, heading towards the city La Conte.

Interrupted by regrettable unexpected event, Mass was finally able to proceed as planned. Although no one was injured and nothing was broken in the church, located along the Avenue Jean Moulin, the parishioners, many of whom are elderly, were greatly shocked by the disrespectful act of the youths of North African origin....

and from a comment on the website, "North African origin"—read, "Muslim".

Carcassonne has been under Muslim conquest before. In 725, the Wali Ambisa took the city following the Islamic conquest of the Visigoth kingdom of Spain. The city remained in the hands of Muslims until 752, when it was freed by the Franks led by Pippin the Short.

The 10 weirdest new species of 2012

A mushroom named after SpongeBob, a sneezing monkey, and a blue tarantula top this year's list of Earth's most bizarre residents

Rainy days are downers for the newly discovered Rhinopithecus strykeri monkeys, who start sneezing at the slightest drizzle.
(The Week) Rainy days are downers for the newly discovered Rhinopithecus strykeri monkeys, who start sneezing at the slightest drizzle.

It's estimated that Earth is home to at least 8 million living species, and every year scientists add 15,000 to 20,000 new discoveries to that tally. But thousands of species are threatened with extinction, too, thanks to habitat destruction, climate change, and other factors. For the past five years, in an effort to bring attention to the biodiversity crisis, the International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) at Arizona State University has worked in conjunction with biologists worldwide to cobble together the newly added animals and plants they find most interesting. More than 200 organisms were nominated, but only a few were selected. In no particular order, here are this year's 10 strangest additions to the world's living things:

1. The SpongeBob SquarePants mushroom

The Malaysian mushroom that "lives in the rain forest, under a tree" is nearly as strange as its Nickelodeon namesake, says Wynne Parry at LiveScience. The resilient fungus, known scientifically as Spongiforma squarepantsii, can be squeezed and wrung, but still returns to its original form.

2. A monkey that sneezes when it rains

This strange-looking monkey has black fur and a white beard, with a stubby, upturned nose that causes it to sneeze whenever it's raining. "To avoid inhaling water, the monkeys supposedly sit with their heads tucked between their knees on drizzly days," says LiveScience's Parry.

3. A walking cactus

At first glance, the newly discovered but long-extinct organism looks like a small, two-inch cactus. But Diania cactiformis is actually a worm-like arthropod with a hard exoskeleton and multiple legs, and may even be an ancient ancestor of modern spiders and crustaceans.

4. The Devil's worm

These tiny 0.02-inch long worms were discovered nearly a mile inside a South African gold mine — the deepest a multi-cellular organism has ever been found, says Thomas H. Maugh II at the Los Angeles Times. "It was named Halicephalobus mephisto from the Faust legend because it survives at high pressures and temperatures."

Photo: A.G. Borgonie, Ghent University, Belgium; Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image, face view of H. mephisto

5. An orchid that only blooms at night

In Papua New Guinea, a rare orchid named Bulbophyllum nocturnum opens up around 10 p.m. and closes early the next morning. As far as experts know, it's the only nocturnally blooming orchid.

6. A parasitic, egg-laying wasp

This tiny Spanish parasite, Kollosmosoma sentum, is constantly on the prowl for ants. In a blink-of-the-eye sting that lasts just 1/20th of a second, the wasp is actually laying eggs into the ants' abdomen. (Watch a video here.)

7. A blue tarantula

What's furry, has eight legs, and is blue all over? This "breathtakingly beautiful" iridescent tarantula from Brazil — the first creature from the country to ever make the list.

8. A high-altitude poppy

The rare flower named Meconopsis autumnalis looks like an ordinary yellow poppy. So what makes it special? The flower only grows in the thin-aired mountains of Nepal, well over 10,000 feet above sea level.

9. A meaty millipede

The Crurifarcimen vaganas from Tanzania is 6.3 inches long and boasts 56 pairs of legs, making it the world's largest millipede. Researchers have dubbed it the "wandering leg sausage" thanks to its uncanny resemblance to the tubular meat product.

10. A kite-like jellyfish

This "strikingly beautiful but venomous box jelly" was first sighted in 2001, but has become increasingly prevalent around the globe. Over 300 entries were submitted in an online competition to name the translucent species before the name Tamoya ohboya was officially selected. Presumably, the name was inspired by the yelps ("Oh boy!") uttered by victims of the jellyfish's sting.

SSPX Unification Postponed?

At The Eponymous Flower, a report from Kreuz.net:

http://www.kreuz.net/article/article.15256.jpg(kreuz.net) Pope Benedict XVI. will only  take care of the dossier "Society of St. Pius" in summer vacation -- therefore after the High Feast of St. Peter and Paul.

This is what Europe's largest Catholic internet site 'kreuz.net' has learned from Vatican circles.

Because of the current difficult inner-Church situation that is involved with the reconciliation with the SSPX must be immediately managed before there can be a unification.

Till now observers originally thought that the Vatican would have made known the reconciliation between the Holy See and the Society of St. Pius X on Pentecost.

Ann Barnhardt:

1. I stumbled on my words a bit and I just wanted to make clear what I was saying at the 1:43 mark. I am NOT being followed nor am I the least bit paranoid that I am being followed. If I am, I would like to apologize to whoever is "following" or "surveilling" me, because, yes, I am the single most BORING person on the face of the earth.

2. Warren hits it out of the park at the end when he drills in on the adolescent narcissism and self-absorption of Facebook. Dude, that's our culture in a nutshell: a society of people stunted into a perpetual adolescence, with its attendant ignorance, sense of entitlement, sense of invincibility and lack of fully-realized masculinity - manifested in cowardice. Facebook is a self-feeding derivative of that childishness.

3. The scripture reference is right in the heart of the Sermon on the Mount.
But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil. --Matthew 5:37
Translation: CUT THE CRAP. Isn't this exactly the problem today? No one talks straight. No one lays it out. No one is honest and forthright. It's all just a steady stream of mincing, equivocating, politically correct, lying bullshit. Anything to be "liked", given a "thumbs up" or to generate cash flow. No one's "yes" means "yes", and no one's "no" means "no" anymore. People are pathologically incapable of answering the damn question. People are pathologically incapable of clarity for fear of "giving offense."

Well, except for me. And I guess that is why I have any degree of popularity, and why people find me interesting. People are so unused to seeing someone who is forthright that they are shocked by it. How incredibly sad.

4. People say to me, "But Ann, I only say private stuff on the "private message" side of Facebook, so no one else can see it. I never put anything personal on my wall. So my info is all totally private and secure."

And then Ann does a double face-palm, goes over and sits on the stairs and quietly sobs.

Open-Mindedness and Tolerance

The Butler Did It: Pope's Closest Lay Helper Leaked Secret Letters

RORATE CÆLI reports a story from the Italian news website Orticalab :
The Pope betrayed by his butler
The "source" is found, it is the house steward of the Pontifical Family, Paolo Gabriele
 Friday, May 25, 2012
When reality exceeds fiction. Paolo Gabriele, the house steward of the Pontifical Family, that is, the butler of Pope Benedict, is the "source" that has passed on the secret letters of His Holiness [published in the book His Holiness, published this week in Italy - see previous post].
At this moment, this is what seems to be the end of an obscure affair that has lasted for several months in the sacred palaces. ... [F]rom what can be learned from Vatican sources, Ratzinger's enemy would be his closest lay helper. The one who, together with secretaries [Monsignors] Georg Gänswein and Alfred Xuereb and the four Memores Domini [consecrated laywomen] of Communion and Liberation, shares the day with Benedict XVI. From the morning rise to the mass in the private Chapel in the Pontifical apartment, to meals and audiences. A very hard blow for Joseph Ratzinger, surrounded in his home by the wolves whom he had mentioned at the beginning of his pontificate.
Gabriele is under arrest at the moment. This morning, the Pope's butler was heard in a hearing conducted by the Vatican prosecutor, Nicola Picardi. The inquiry conducted by the Vatican Gerdarmerie on the leaking of secret documents "has led to the identification of one person in the illicit possession of reserved documents." Thus said Father Federico Lombardi, explaining that this person "is now at the disposal of the Vatican judicial authorities for further investigations..."  (continued)

The Bishops are Being Played. Like Cheap Fiddles.

By Ann Barnhardt

I do not understand how it is that this isn't glaringly, beat-you-over-the-head obvious, but whatever. I'll explain it. Listen up. Especially if you have a hat shaped like the blade of a posthole digger in your wardrobe, and people actually call you "Excellency."

Withdrawing health insurance (like Franciscan University at Steubenville, Ohio), shutting down schools, closing adoption agencies, soup kitchens or ANYTHING ELSE in "protest" of ObamaCare and the HHS "mandates" is EXACTLY, PRECISELY, TOTALLY and COMPLETELY what the Obama regime wants.

Further, the reason why the "press" has OBVIOUSLY been given the order to keep all of this quiet and to not report in any way on the lawsuits filed by the dozens of various Catholic organizations this week against the Obama regime - the largest religious legal action ever taken against the U.S. government by a long shot - is obvious.

The Obama regime is sitting back and watching all of you cowardly fools fold your own tents. None of the stupid bread-and-circus addicted crowd knows anything about any of this. You have to break out of your narcissistic little world and understand that even though these things are earth-shattering to you, uh, most people in this country don't even know that their "government" has declared war on the Church.

So, in a few months, after you all have played right into their hands and shut down your facilities, hospitals, schools and services, congratulating yourselves on your "brave protest", the Obama regime is going to make a ginormous propaganda offensive telling all of the stupid TV-addled idiots that the Catholic Church doesn't give a crap about "the people" because they have shut down their hospitals, schools, their soup kitchens, their adoption agencies and won't even provide health insurance plans to the poor, poor youths attending their universities. The Catholic Church hates "the people", hates charity, hates sick people, hates women, hates children, hates poor people and is hoarding all of its money.

Oh, but the Obama regime LOVES you. The Obama regime will provide you and anyone else who joins their Free Shit Army with all of the "free healthcare", "free education", "free food" and free unicorn farts they could ever want or need.

Listen, you fools. YOU DON'T SHUT ANYTHING DOWN. You keep going exactly as you have been, and you force those dirty rotten SOBs to literally storm your hospitals and shut YOU down at gunpoint. And I'm not kidding. Make them physically shut down your hospital by dragging you out at gunpoint. Make them physically shut down your schools. Make them shut down your university by force because you won't cover abortions in your student health plan. Make them physically shut down your soup kitchens. Make them shut down your adoption agencies because you won't hand a baby boy over to two men who like to jam various and sundry body parts up each others' rectums.

In other words, STAND AND FIGHT.

The only proper course of action is total non-compliance with these totalitarian edicts of the regime, and FORCING THEIR HAND.

Anything less than that, and you LOSE. MEN fight wars. If you refuse to do your duty and act like MEN, then the war is already lost. And make no mistake, cowardice is a grave sin, and you will answer for it.

Every bishop is given a crosier upon his ordination to the episcopacy. A crosier is a shepherd's staff. It is a six to seven foot long staff that a shepherd uses to beat the crap out of wolves. That's your job. Beating the crap out of the wolves - not killing all of the sheep yourself so that there is nothing left for the wolves to eat.
MAN UP!!!! FIGHT, YOU FOOLS!!!

Vatican Outlines Virgin Mary Sighting Rules To Evaluate Authenticity

Religion News Service  |  By

The Vatican has published rules to evaluate the authenticity of the dozens of apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported each year.

The “Norms Regarding the Manner of Proceeding in the Discernment of Presumed Apparitions or Revelations” have been in use since 1978, but until now had been available only in Latin, never officially published and only circulated among bishops and specialists.

The Vatican document has now been translated into English and other languages to aid bishops in the “difficult task of discerning presumed apparitions, revelations, messages or ... extraordinary phenomena of presumed supernatural origin,” Cardinal William Levada, the head of the Vatican doctrinal office, wrote in a companion letter last December that was published only recently on the Vatican website.

The norms mandate that the local bishop must conduct a “serious investigation” to ascertain, with “at least great probability,” whether the Marian apparition effectively took place.

The rules also require an evaluation of the “personal qualities” of the alleged seer, including his or her “psychological equilibrium,” “rectitude of moral life” and “docility towards Ecclesiastical Authority.” The contents of the “revelation” must be “immune” from theological error, and the apparition must bear “abundant... spiritual fruit,” such as conversions.

The authenticity of the vision should be rejected if, among other factors, the alleged seer shows “psychological disorder” or “evidence of a search for profit."

In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed a high-level commission to evaluate the authenticity of the controversial Marian apparitions in Medjugorje, Bosnia, which have been attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims for years despite opposition from local bishops.

PepsiCo Says It Will Halt Use of Aborted Fetal Cells in Flavor Research

http://thenewamerican.com/media/k2/items/cache/d72b6d3fb781b0bb626216fc648ebf68_XL.jpg

By

(New American) A pro-life leader has won a victory in her efforts to convince soft-drink manufacturer PepsiCo to stop the use of aborted fetal cells in its research for enhancing the flavors of its products. Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Children of God for Life (COGFL), announced that in late April she had received a letter from Paul Boykas, PepsiCo’s vice president for Global Public Policy, confirming that the company will not allow the use of HEK-293 — a cell line derived from human embryonic kidney — in its partnership with Senomyx, the company with which it had inked a four-year, $30 million contract for flavor research.

As reported last November by The New American, a PepsiCo shareholder had filed a resolution with the Securities and Exchange Commission in an effort halt the company from contracting with Senomyx, which, according to documents collected by Vinnedge, used cell lines derived from aborted babies in its process of producing artificial flavor enhancers. According to a report by LifeNews.com at the time, Pepsi had “ignored concerns and criticism from dozens of pro-life groups and tens of thousands of pro-life people who voiced their opposition to PepsiCo contracting with biotech company Senomyx even after it was found to be testing their food additives using fetal cells from abortions.”

But after a nearly year-long campaign led by COGFL that included a nationwide boycott of PepsiCo products, in late April Boykas sent a letter to Vinnedge assuring her that PepsiCo would not “conduct or fund research — including research performed by third parties — that utilizes any human tissue or cell lines derived from embryos or fetuses.” Boykas also assured Vinnedge that “Senomyx does not use HEK cells or any other tissues or cell lines derived from human embryos or fetuses for research performed on behalf of PepsiCo.”

In response to the letter, Vinnedge said that she was “absolutely thrilled with PepsiCo’s decision. They have listened to their customers and have made both a wise and profound statement of corporate integrity that deserves the utmost respect, admiration, and support of the public.”

Vinnedge said that she had spoken personally with Boykas, who told her that in the process of internal discussions on the issue, company officials had recognized that it was not in PepsiCo’s best interest to continue a policy that could hurt customer relations. “We took the matter very seriously,” Vinnedge quoted Boykas as saying. “We have an official statement on Responsible Research and we intend to live by that policy.”

The policy, Vinnedge explained, “precludes any research by PepsiCo or third parties they fund from using human tissue or cell lines derived from embryos or fetuses.”

News of PepsiCo’s decision reverberated through the pro-life community. “We are grateful to PepsiCo, and especially to all those who sent a loud and clear message to the management of this company,” said Brad Mattes of Life Issues Institute, one of the over 30 groups that joined in the efforts to persuade PepsiCo to change its policy. He added that “there are moral cell lines Senomyx can and should be using — not just for PepsiCo research but for all their customers.” Vinnedge noted that such usable cell lines could easily come from animals, insects, or even non-fetal human cells that express the “G protein” relevant for taste receptors.
Vinnedge said that beyond its contract with PepsiCo, Senomyx, which receives royalties for products sold using its ingredients, needs to rethink its use of aborted fetal cells in flavor research. “If they do not use aborted fetal cell lines, they offend no one,” she said. “If they do, they most certainly offend at least half of U.S. consumers who are pro-life.” She said that “it only makes financial sense for both Senomyx and their collaborators to avoid a substantial loss of potential market. Senomyx needs to stop using the aborted fetal cell lines entirely and we will continue to pressure them to do so.”

The pro-life leader added that individuals and families who had boycotted Pepsi products over the issue should now write the company and thank its CEO for the ethical decision — “and then go buy your favorite Pepsi products to celebrate!” Vinnedge said that “too often we seem to focus on the negatives and forget to take the time to let others know we appreciate their efforts. It is our sincere hope that the public will once again rise to the occasion en masse as they did in the boycott — but this time in appreciation and support of PepsiCo.”

The Catholic Church has declared war on Obamacare. This could spell the end of Obama

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/files/2012/05/obamacare.jpg

By

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/files/2011/04/Tim-this-one.jpg(The Telegraph) On Monday, 43 Catholic institutions filed lawsuits against the White House in protest at its contraception mandate. The culture war just got hotter, and we just moved a few steps closer to Obama’s eventual defeat.

The election experts will continue to insist that mandating Catholic employers to provide contraception in their workers’ insurance plans is an overall win for the Prez. After all, even Roman Catholics repeatedly tell pollsters that they see nothing wrong with contraception. The world has moved on from the 1950s when most people’s idea of contraception was a cold shower and a rosary, and the conservative Catholic opposition to the mandate is hopelessly marginal. Even a few nuns have reconciled themselves to it.

But life is more complicated than a snapshot poll can ever show. The pollsters make three mistakes. First, they presume that people are telling the truth. The fact that voters regularly say that they back gay marriage yet always vote it down in popular referenda, proves that many don’t like owning up to their own prejudices over the telephone. Second, while the headline figures in these polls show majority support for the equal availability of contraception, other findings within the same reports sometimes articulate unease about compelling Catholic organisations to provide it (in this poll, Catholics voice support for exemptions for religious institutions). There’s an obvious difference between personally thinking contraception is okay but not wanting to see others forced to share your view. No one would mandate a kosher kitchen to serve up pork, no matter how good it might taste... (continued)

SSPX's Bishop Bernard Fellay: "The Devil is at Large!"

Bishop Bernard Fellay via RORATE CÆLI:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lg_x2oevOaI/T7qBNIqHK8I/AAAAAAAAFzE/0sSFSLAFoyU/s1600/bpf-dsalzburg.JPG
"I tell you, really, the devil is at large! And, well, everywhere. In the Fraternity itself; throughout the Church. There really are people who do not want us. Those are the modern, the progressives. And they, too, cause a lot of pressure in order to stop the right thing from being done, the right thing, that is: justice. That once again we will be officially recognised as being Catholic. And that does, of course, not mean that we will all of a sudden accept that which has caused the Church so much damage. One has to understand this correctly. That is not what this is all about. The matter at hand is that we may be recognised the way we are. That we can continue Tradition, that we cannot only show Tradition to others, but also give it to them.

"At the moment I don’t have anything else but this. So, let us continue to pray, let us entrust these big, big intentions to the good God. He will not abandon us! Here we must have this hope! Whoever asks from our Lord His help, will not be left alone by Him!

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Amen."

Update:

"Whether this will come to fruition depends on terms that are not yet clear. There are still points that remain unclear.

It could happen that, in the upcoming days, weeks - it is very hard to ascertain this -, the Pope will decide directly. It could be that he takes the case back to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. There is a lot of pressure in Rome. Which is why I couldn't say more than this. That is the current status.

"One must not think that things will be easy afterwards. To use the words of the Pope that describe the situation quite well: 'I know,' he said, 'that it would be easier both for the Society and for myself to leave the situation as it currently is.'

This describes very well the situation, and also that the Pope himself knows that he, when he does it, will be attacked. And also that the situation will not be easy for us. That which will arise out of this situation will be with Rome or against it. Both of which will be difficult.

"Yet we have trust in the good God. He has guided us very well so far. We must not think that, praying so much, He would abandon us in the moment of greatest danger. That would be [a thought] against hope. We are counting on God's assistance. We are ready to pay the cost. His will be done.

Teddy Roosevelt's Suppressed 1894 Winchester

http://www.guns.com/images/editor/Roosevelt_Winchester_1894_2.jpg

Story by: Max Slowik

(Guns.com) A new exhibit is coming to the National Firearms Museum this June, the Theodore Roosevelt Collection. Teddy Roosevelt is famous for his love of shooting, hunting, and battle. He was an avid gun user and collector, and a great fan of Winchester lever-action rifles, and one of his most-used and prized Winchesters will be a part of it.

That Rifle is a Model 1894 likely chambered in .30-30, which he often called his "Little .30." Roosevelt instantly became a fan of the cartridge when it was first introduced. He was such a fan of their rifles that he tried every new model introduced, and when he felled an antelope at about 180 yards he declared the .30-30 Model 1894 as "Aces," and decided to get one for use at home in Long Island.

Chiefly purposed for varminting on and around his property, Roosevelt had it modified and suppressed with a Maxim silencer, as to be kind to his neighbors. "The President's rifle comes with the usual Roosevelt bells and whistles—the crescent buttplate, no raised check piece, as well as a little something extra; a threaded barrel. Yes, you guessed it, Roosevelt's '94 Winchester comes with it's very own suppressor."

While .30-30 was his go-to cartridge for culling local pests, Roosevelt was exceptionally fond of another smokeless powder chambering, .405 Winchester.

http://www.guns.com/images/editor/Roosevelt_Winchester_1894_3.jpg

"Introduced in 1904, the .405 Winchester cartridge was the most powerful round ever developed for a Winchester lever-action rifle. Roosevelt had to have not one, not two, but three 1895s in .405, and it proved very effective on almost every sort of game in Africa. The big 300 grain bullet was a hard hitter with an initial muzzle velocity of more than 2230 fps.

"In perhaps the best Presidential endorsement of any product ever, Roosevelt wrote in Scribners Magazine 'The Winchester .405 is, at least for me personally the medicine gun for lions!' He created a sensation for the gun that lasts, to this day. The .405 was discontinued in 1932. However rifles chambered in 'Teddy's caliber' continue to bring a high premium over examples that are chambered in a round still readily available. In 2000, Winchester announced the re-introduction of the Browning 1895 in .405 caliber, demonstrating that the spirit of 'Big Medicine' is stilt alive and well."

That being said, the Model 1894 is one of Winchester's greatest all-time successes, having made over 7 million of these rifles in various calibers, with many other companies manufacturing guns patterned on the design to this day.

We have to wonder what other guns will be a part of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, and we look forward to next month when it is unveiled. Read more about it and the other exhibits at the National Firearms Museum.

Statement on the Passing of Fr. Norman Weslin, Founder of Lambs of Christ

Wichita, KS — Operation Rescue has been informed that long-time pro-life leader Fr. Norman Weslin passed from this life Wednesday evening. He was the founder of the Lambs of Christ, a group that engaged in peaceful civil disobedience at abortion clinics in the late 1980′s and early 1990′s.

Fr. Weslin was arrested and was jailed dozens of times at abortion clinic sit-ins, also known as Rescues. He boldly placed himself between abortion-bound women and the abortionists’ doors while pleading for the lives of the pre-born. Many children were saved from abortion as the result of his sometimes controversial ministry.
“We mourn the passing of this great pro-life hero who lived sacrificially so others who he would never know could experience the gift of life. May God bless his eternal soul and richly reward him for his service,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation.

Pacquiao Banned from L.A. Mall for Same-Sex Marriage Opposition

From Ben Shapiro at Breitbart's Big Government:

The “tolerant” same-sex marriage left has struck again – this time, at the popular hangout The Grove, in Los Angeles. The owner of The Grove, Rick Caruso, tweeted that iconic boxing great and Philippines Congressman Manny Pacquiao would not be allowed “on the premises” thanks to Pacquiao’s outspoken opposition to same-sex marriage. “Boxer Manny Pacquiao is not welcome @TheGroveLA,” he tweeted. “@TheGroveLA is a gathering place for all Angelenos, not a place for intolerance.” Pacquiao was supposed to do an interview today with “Extra” at The Grove.

What did heretofore-Obama-supporter Pacquiao do to earn the ban? He did an interview with the National Conservative Examiner in which he said, “God’s words first … obey God’s law first before considering the laws of man. God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married. It should not be of the same sex, so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah.” In other words, like the vast majority of religious people of all persuasions around the world, Pacquiao is against same-sex marriage.

That now earns him a ban from a public area in Los Angeles. And make no mistake – while Caruso is the owner of the complex, he relies heavily on public funding in his projects.

The left wants to claim intolerance here, but it is surely the highest form of intolerance not to allow a religious person who openly expresses him or herself onto the premises of an outdoor shopping mall. In fact, The Grove features a kosher hot dog stand frequented by Orthodox Jews, virtually all of whom oppose same-sex marriage. Will Caruso ban them? Are all of those who believe in traditional scriptural
interpretation, and who oppose same-sex marriage, no longer welcome at Caruso’s myriad establishments?

Caruso is an emissary of the leftist thought police who say that you don’t deserve the privileges of decent treatment if you "haven't evolved." Pacquiao has done nothing to harm or mistreat gays or lesbians; he actually says he has a gay relative, and that gays and lesbians can’t do anything about their orientation because they were born that way. But that’s not enough – he has to bow to the politically correct same-sex marriage crowd or be barred from the premises.

There is a question as to whether Caruso legally can bar Pacquiao from the premises based on statements Pacquiao has made outside The Grove. In fact, even were Pacquiao to “reasonably exercise” his right to free speech at The Grove, it is likely that the California Supreme Court would uphold his right to do so without being kicked off the premises.

Caruso is in the wrong both morally and legally here. But don’t expect the leftist press to call him out on it. When it comes to bullying, the true bullies are the leftists who maintain that in order to be treated as a normal human being, you must agree with them. And even the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet can’t avoid their heavy fist.

Jeremiah Wright: I “Made It Comfortable” For Obama to Accept Christianity Without Having to Renounce Islam

Barack Obama takes his shoes off at a visit to a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. (White House)

By Jim Hoft

(The Gateway Pundit) In a shocking interview yesterday on the Sean Hannity Radio Show, author Ed Klein said Barack Obama’s former pastor helped Obama accept Christianity without having to renounce Islam.

The Daily Caller reported:
Klein also said Wright told him he “made it comfortable” for Obama to accept Christianity without having renounce his “Islamic background,” which Klein said he has on tape.
Here is Ed Klein on Hannity talking about his interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Klein spoke more on this in a separate interview with NewsMax:
Klein says Obama originally sought out Wright to discuss community activism.
“Quickly the conversations turned from picking up garbage on the street and getting streetlights put up on street corners to political matters and religious matters,” Klein says. “And the Rev. Wright turned into really a substitute father figure, who guided Obama in the two major areas of his life.”
The first area was Obama’s identity — just who was he?
“Obama was steeped in Islam but knew nothing about Christianity,” Klein says.
Klein asked Wright if he converted Obama from being a Muslim into a Christian.
“He said, I don’t know about that. but I can tell you that I made it easy for him to come to an understanding of who Jesus Christ is and not feel that he was turning his back on his Islamic friends and his Islamic traditions and his understanding of Islam,” Klein says.
The second area was Obama’s political philosophy. Wright introduced Obama to Black Liberation theology.

Bishop Martin Amos and Diocese of Davenport Iowa in Full Blown Retreat

Hello everyone and welcome to The Vortex where lies and falsehoods are trapped and exposed. I’m Michael Voris.

Well we need to issue a correction-slash follow up to some information we told you about in one of last week’s Vortex episodes .. a significant follow up.

We highlighted a situation at Prince of Peace Catholic High School in Clinton Iowa in the diocese of Davenport Iowa and gave a big hand to the bishop there, 71 year old Martin Amos.

Here’s a quick background summary. A homosexual activist group had announced it was awarding a 40-thousand dollar scholarship to one of Prince of Peace’s graduating seniors because he was openly gay and had the courage to come out to his peers and teachers blah blah.

They are certainly within their rights to give money to whomever they want. But it wasn’t just a case of giving money. Included WITH the award was an agreement between the school and the organization that a representative from the group would ONE – appear at the graduation .. TWO – make a public announcement to the graduates and guests about the nature of the scholarship and THREE – hand a statue to the young man to accompany the money.

When the bishop learned of this .. he correctly had his chancery announce a stop to the proceedings .. not the scholarship money mind you .. that was none of his business .. just the presentation at the CATHOLIC high school graduation ceremonies .. which as chief shepherd of the flock of his diocese is VERY much his business.

When news broke of his decision .. all the expected boo birds came out .. decrying his homophobia and the excessive rigidity and discrimination against poor victim gays and on and on.

Then .. the Catholic world following this story sat back in disbelief as this weekend.. news broke that the bishop has been in quiet sideline negotiations with the gay group.. despite his announcement that the presentation would NOT proceed.

The group The Eychaner Foundation expressed subdued outrage that the boy was being victimized by the mean old homophobic Church. So the Bishop struck a bargain with them which was announced in a statement this weekend. We’ve attached a link.

In short .. remember the three points .. An Eychaner Foundation rep would be at the commencement.. he would make a speech he wrote extolling the glories of being out, loud and proud about being a homosexual student .. and he would hand a trophy statue to the student.

Well .. here’s is the “common ground” compromise. An Eychaner representative will be 1. at the commencement .. his speech WILL BE READ .. just not by him .. but by .. get this .. an OFFICIAL FROM THE DIOCESE .. and then the Eychaner rep will hand the student the statue.

If there was any possible way to strike a compromise which could possibly be WORSE for the Church .. this would be it. Chancery officials must have labored well into the early morning hours to figure how to make the Church look the most imbecilic as possible.

Picture this .. a speech .. the words of an actively supportive homosexual rights group praising and celebrating teenage sodomy are not going to be coming out of the mouth of the actual group .. that is scandalous enough.

But now .. they are going to be pouring out of the mouth of an official of the Church in front of God and everyone. How exactly is this a compromise? The Eychaner group expressed deep satisfaction at the agreement. WE BET THEY DID!

There are so many things wrong and scandalous here .. its hard to know where to begin.

First .. the school staff .. CATHOLIC school staff administration and faculty. This group supported this young fellow in his disordered sexuality .. they wrote letters for him to get the scholarship AND they were jubilant that he brought his “boyfriend” to the prom.

Way to care for his soul. Fantastic models of the faith. Maybe you think the chancery should give you all a raise .. in fact .. you should be fired for gross negligence for failing this young man. You are supporting a moral evil .. corrupting the minds of young men and women in your charge .. and contributing to the continued diminution of the Faith.

The Chancery officials who are complicit in this should immediately lose their positions.

They have bowed to the pressures of the world and not defended Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church and Her infallible teachings.

By allowing this presentation to occur .. chancery and school officials will be sending the very clear message that an accommodation can be made for the grave sin of homosexual acts. Whether they intend to or not .. that is exactly what everyone in that audience will take away from it.

And given the celebrity that has popped up around this case .. who can’t imagine that there wont in fact be a loud sustained and raucous celebration of this award presentation on the part of the other students who will view it as the triumph of good over the wicked forces of homophobia and discrimination?

The question of supporting students who have particular struggles .. be they spiritual, physical or emotional is of course the purview of Catholic school educators .. in fact it is uniquely theirs.

But to celebrate a condition the Church calls objectively disordered in an official setting such as a graduation in front of hundreds and hundreds of people .. and have the local press carry the message beyond the doors and confines of the actual commencement is 2 beyond scandalous.

And the fact that the scandal has been compounded by first standing up for the truth and then doing an about face is even more shocking. But to further add disgrace by actually agreeing to have a Church official stand up and do the reading of the nicely packaged propaganda from an open homosexual group which totally disagrees with Church teaching is simply beyond the pale.

Let’s look at this in reverse. Lets assume that for some odd reason .. the Eychaner Group had a worker that disagreed with their active homosexualism.

And let’s further assume that the diocese of Davenport had the opportunity to go to company headquarters and make a public presentation before hundreds of people praising the employee for his bravery in overcoming the discrimination and Catholophobia he had faced for upholding Church teaching.

Do you think for one instant that the Eychaner group would permit that to happen? Not in thousand eternities.

Church leaders in the US can give all the bravado sounding speeches in front of friendly Catholic audiences they want to. They can write loads of articles and grant interviews and appear on TV and radio in settings that are little else than official mouthpieces for themselves and talk about the need to re-capture the Catholic identity and wanting to be the friendly Church and eschewing that bar public relations image of the “Church of NO” but it wont mean a thing.

And it wont mean a thing because at the root .. the bottom line .. the absolute final measuring stick of Catholic identity is this .. the work to save souls. Period. Souls cannot be saved when the truth is being ignored.

Any loss of souls that might be contributed to by this scandal will be partially on the leaders who facilitated this sad event at the high school. No wonder faithful Catholics are abandoning the so-called Catholic school system. More need to leave .. as quickly as possible. I wonder as the gay group representative hands the award to the gay student.. after the diocesan official has of course finished his propaganda speech .. has amid loud cheers and high-fiving .. I wonder .. who will be concerning themselves with the young man’s soul.

GOD love you .. I’m Michael Voris

Franciscan University of Steubenville to Drop Student Health Insurance

From the Cardinal Newman Society blog:

Franciscan University of Steuvenville just announced that it will no longer offer student health insurance because of the Obama administration’s HHS contraceptive mandate that would require Catholic colleges to cover contraceptives, abortifacients and sterilization procedures.
“The Obama Administration has mandated that all health insurance plans must cover ‘women’s health services’ including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing medications as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA),” the university says in a new post on its website. “Up to this time, Franciscan University has specifically excluded these services and products from its student health insurance policy, and we will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.”
“Additionally, the PPACA increased the mandated maximum coverage amount for student policies to $100,000 for the 2012-13 school year, which would effectively double your premium cost for the policy in fall 2012, with the expectation of further increases in the future,” FUS continues.
“Due to these changes in regulation by the federal government, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, the University 1) will no longer require that all full-time undergraduate students carry health insurance, 2) will no longer offer a student health insurance plan, and 3) will no longer bill those not covered under a parent/guardian plan or personal plan for student health insurance,” the college said.
Franciscan University says the current student health insurance plan will expire on August 15...

Eastern Catholics have much to offer US church, cardinal tells bishops

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- While their numbers are small and their material resources are few, members of the Eastern Catholic churches in the United States have much to offer the country in terms of their fidelity to Christ despite persecution and their deeply religious cultures, said Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches.

Eastern Catholics "are a bridge" supporting Catholics in their homelands with prayers, advocacy and financial support while at the same time enriching the United States with their cultural and religious identity, Cardinal Sandri told U.S. bishops from the Chaldean, Ruthenian, Maronite, Ukrainian, Armenian, Melkite, Syriac and Romanian Catholic churches. The cardinal met with the 14 bishops May 15 to discuss a wide variety of common concerns at the beginning of the bishops' "ad limina" visits to the Vatican.

Earlier in the morning, the cardinal was the main celebrant and homilist at a Mass with the bishops in St. Peter's Basilica. The heads of every diocese or eparchy -- as the Eastern Catholic jurisdictions are known -- send detailed reports on their dioceses to the Vatican before the "ad limina" visits. Summarizing what was common in the reports of the Eastern Catholic dioceses, Cardinal Sandri said, "Your territories are enormous, and your communities often find themselves far from each other. Some of the eparchies are young and still in need of adequate structures."

Many of the dioceses -- some of which cover the entire United States or even the United States and Canada -- have few financial resources and the situation has been "exacerbated by the economic crisis," the cardinal said.

Monsignor Georg Gänswein delivered Bishop Fellay's response to Pope

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Jo7lJoQhtjw/S51kdlPbBXI/AAAAAAAANyk/vmWJ5tnuasw/s400/pope+gay+amd_pope-gaenswein+guardian+co+uk.jpg

From RORATE CÆLI:
A rumor (take it as such, but I assure you that it is credible) that has been revealed was that the latest response of Bp. Fellay, by which he accepts the famous [Doctrinal] Preamble, but with some significant modifications, before being officially sent to [the Pontifical Commission] Ecclesia Dei and to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was made known, by way of Mons. Georg [Gänswein, personal secretary of Pope Benedict XVI], directly to the Pope, who did not raise any objections. A way to ensure that some overzealous Roman servant, perhaps due to an excessive affection for the text of the Preamble originally prepared by his Dicastery, will not raise any problems...

Man pulled over for being radioactive

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17mk2hfdbibvnjpg/original.jpg

By Julian Whitcrosse

(io9) Last Wednesday, Mike Apatow was getting on to Interstate 84 in Newtown, CT, when police stopped him for no reason he could determine. When the cop told him that his car had set off his radioactivity detectors, it started making sense: Apatow was most certainly radioactive.

Earlier in the day, Apatow had had a bit of radioactive material injected into his veins. He wasn't trying to turn himself into a superhero—just trying to keep himself alive. The off-duty firefighter had gone to a cardiology office to have a cardiac stress test, which tracks the function of the heart by tracking radioactivity as it moves through the circulatory system. Apatow had come to the office after feeling ill earlier and finding that his blood pressure had gone up way above where it was usually. Whatever caused the blip went away quickly, and Apatow went back to work, as recounted at ctpost.com.

Cardiologists say this kind of issue is more common than you might think, and often warn their stress-test patients that they may run into some unwanted attention in places like airports. Apatow's doctor had in fact given him a document explaining the situation just in case he got ran into any suspicion of nuclear monkey business. So in the end, he emerged from both the stress test and the police stop without missing a beat.

Hero, who saved 500 lives, dies at 85

THE "Angel of The Gap", Sydney's Don Ritchie, has died aged 85.

By Miles Godfrey

(The Australian)  Mr. Ritchie spent 50 years coaxing desperate people back from The Gap, the notorious cliff at Watsons Bay where hundreds have died or thought about taking their lives.

He helped save 500 despairing souls - usually with little more than compassion, a warm smile and a hot cuppa.

"Those who knew him knew he was a very strong person and a very capable person," Mr Ritchie's daughter Sue said today.

Federal MP Malcolm Turnbull, whose electorate includes The Gap, added: "A true hero, one of our greatest Australians. RIP."

Born in Vaucluse in 1926, Mr Ritchie died peacefully at home on Old South Head Road, Watsons Bay yesterday.

The former navy seaman turned life insurance salesman was never one to shout about his exploits.

He helped because he could.

Ms Ritchie said: "It was just something that he saw and that he had to do something about."

NSW Mental Health Minister Kevin Humphries recalled when Mr Ritchie was named a Local Hero in the 2011 Australian of the Year Awards.

"Upon accepting the award Mr Ritchie urged people to never be afraid to speak to those most in need," he said.

"Always remember the power of the simple smile, a helping hand, a listening ear and a kind word."

A funeral will be held in Sydney on Friday.

Mr Ritchie's family asked for donations to be made to the Black Dog Institute or to Lifeline.

Readers seeking support and information about suicide prevention can contact Lifeline on 131114.
