Holy See Documents From World War II Go Online

Researchers Welcome Availability of Pius XII Information

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 25, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican announced today that official documents spanning more than 40 years are now available online.

The entire collection of the of the Actae Sanctae Sedis (A.S.S.) and of the Acta Apostolicae Sedis (A.A.S.) -- i.e., the official Acts of the Holy See from 1865 to 2007 -- are now available in pdf format.
Also available is a multi-volume collection of acts from World War II, (Actes et documents du Saint-Siège relatifs à la Seconde Guerre Mondiale), published by order of Paul VI starting in 1965, and edited by a specialized group of four Jesuit historians.

The project of putting the information online was supported by the New York-based Pave the Way Foundation.

A statement from Pave the Way noted the collection -- with its more than 9,000 pages -- describes the contents of 5,125 documents that are still not catalogued in the Vatican Secret Archives, and consequently, still not open to the public. These documents have been at the heart of controversy as researchers seek to settle debate over the role Pope Pius XII played in saving Jews from the Holocaust.

Gary Krupp, president of the Pave the Way Foundation, said the research project is "extremely important."
"To date, most of the research done in this area has been selective in nature. By opening these documents up for worldwide study, we hope to bring the truth of this controversial period to light," he said.

The foundation enlisted Israeli photographer Ardon Bar-Hama, whose work includes the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Codex Vaticanus, in order to deliver the highest quality fully searchable digital images of the documents.

Elliot Hershberg, chairman of the Pave the Way board, observed, "We felt that it was necessary to open these records, which are certainly not a substitute for the full opening of the war year archives. However, together with Pope Benedict XVI’s ordering of the opening of the Secret Archives up to 1939, we now have a clearer historical picture of the secret actions of Pope Pius XII and his attitude towards the Jewish people, his hatred of Hitler, and his secret work to defeat the Nazi regime.”

The Atonement and the Prodigal Son

Lenten Resources on the Passion of the Christ

Dr. Marcellino D'Ambrosio

“For our sakes God made him who did not know sin to be sin, so that in him we might become the very holiness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Some Christians reading these words over the last few centuries have gotten the wrong idea.  They’ve put this Scripture together with Jesus’ cry from the cross “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me.”  Plus they’ve added to the mix the Apostle’s Creed assertion that Jesus “descended into hell.”  The result is a huge misunderstanding.

It goes something like this.  The sin of the human race called down the punishment not only of physical death and suffering but also spiritual death, total separation from God which is what hell is all about.  Jesus bore this punishment in our place.  This means that he took our sins upon himself to the point that he actually became sinful and abhorrent to the Father.  He was thus truly abandoned by God on the cross and spent three days in hell, with the rest of the damned.

Let’s unravel this wrongheaded idea.  Last week we discussed the true significance of “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me.”  This week we need to clear up the other two misunderstandings.  First, there is 2 Cor 5:21.  In Hebrew, the same word means both “sin” and “sin offering,” What Paul is really saying is not that Jesus became sinful, but that he became a sin offering.  This kind of sacrifice was understood as compensation or restitution to God to make up for offending him through sin.  Honor and glory that God deserved had been withheld from Him; in the sin offering, perfect, costly animals, the most valuable possessions of the typical Israelite, were paid back to God in reparation.Passover Lamb, Jesus
Christ, Easter, Lent, Marcellino D'Ambrosio

The Passover Lamb had to be perfect, without blemish, and his bones could not be broken (that’s why Jesus legs were not broken like the two thieves, Jn 19: 32-37).  Jesus did not become sinful; he was the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world by canceling them out through a sacrifice of overwhelming value.  His self-offering was an extravagant gift.  It consisted of all the love, humility, and obedience that centuries of human beings owed to God but had unjustly withheld from him.

The Father is not a blood-thirsty tyrant whose wrath is appeased by the suffering of Jesus.  He is the loving Father in the story of the Prodigal Son who respects his son’s freedom too much to force him to stay, or to send a posse after him once his sins led him to the brink of despair.

Prodigal Son, Marcellino D'Ambrosio, Catholic ChurchThe Prodigal Son walked away in arrogance.  He would himself have to travel the road back in humility.

Adam, Eve and all of us walked away in pride.  We, their sons and daughters, would have to walk back in humility.  Trouble was, we couldn’t, so deeply had we been wounded by sin.  So God became man and walked the road for us, though it turned out to be the way of the cross.  Perfect humility.  Perfect love.  Perfect suffering.  Relentless and undeterred by every conceivable stumbling block and snare that hell could put in its way.  That is what redeemed us and paid the debt of our sins.

But what about the phrase in the Apostle’s Creed “he descended into hell?”  The word used for hell means not the inferno of the damned (Gehenna), but the abode of the dead known as Sheol, Hades, or Limbo.  The meaning of this is simple– he really experienced the separation of his soul from his body.  It was no drill.  He really died.  For us.  For me.  It was love to the bitter end.

The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson, Marcellino
D'AmbrosioSo Jesus is the conquering hero, not the scape goat.  His free gift of unconquerable love is what atones for our sins.  And the Father rushes out to meet him in love clothing him (and us) with the resurrection.

The passion, then, is all about love.  For God so loved the world that he sent his only Son who would lay down his life for not only his friends, but even for his enemies.

Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay evades capture for a year

A fugitive rhesus monkey which looks both ways before crossing a road has become an unlikely local hero in Florida after resisting determined attempts to capture it for a year.

By Tom Leonard in New York
Published: 6:39PM GMT 24 Mar 2010

The so-called Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay has managed to rise above the jumble of exotic animals, including pythons and big cats, usually on the loose in the state, earning its own Facebook page with more than 24,000 fans.

The creature, native to southern Asia, has been shot several times with tranquiliser darts and has proved equally elusive in urban areas as in dense woodland. Seemingly unfazed by humans, it has been spotted several times relaxing beside people's swimming pools.

Officials are not sure where the monkey came from, but a popular theory is that it became separated from a troop of wild monkeys in a state park around 118 miles north of its current stalking ground. The troop is descended from animals originally imported to star in early Tarzan films.

"He is an extremely intelligent monkey. He is very, very streetwise," said Vernon Yates, a wildlife trapper who said he had pursued the monkey across three counties.

"He knows to check traffic. He knows to look both ways so he doesn't get hit by cars. He knows to stay out of power lines," he said.

Mr Yates claimed to have hit the animal with tranquilliser darts at least twice. On one occasion, the monkey displayed its contempt for the attack by flinging faeces at the hunter before climbing higher into a tree to sleep off the effects of the dart.

Wildlife officials have warned that the fugitive should not be underestimated.

"That animal is so much quicker and more powerful than people perceived. People have no idea how fierce their bites would be," said Gary Morse of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Senators napping, munching on lobster

By J. Taylor Rushing - 03/24/10 08:47 PM ET

Mid-way through a full evening of voting on amendments to the Senate's healthcare reconciliation bill, Democratic senators are fueling up by munching on lobster rolls in the Democratic cloakroom — a delivery from Legal Seafood in honor of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Jim Manley, a spokesman for Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and a former top Kennedy aide, said he did not know who was responsible for the delivery but that it was done as a tribute to Kennedy. The late senator died in August from brain cancer, and had championed healthcare reform as "the cause of my life."

Senators were sometimes napping when off the floor, but Manley said most are ducking out to their hideaway offices near the Senate floor instead of using cots in the cloakroom.

Manley said the Senate will continue until at least 1 a.m., at which point senators will reassess how many more hours to continue.

Stupak: Pope doesn't control Catholic lawmakers

From The Washington Times:

By Kerry Picket on March 24, 2010

Congressman Bart Stupak, a Michigan Democrat, railed against pro-life groups on Tuesday, calling them hypocritical for supporting President Bush's executive order on stem cells and not believing that President Obama's executive order regarding abortion funding in the health care act is "good enough." Mr. Obama is expected to sign the executive order today:
PICKET: There’s the motion to re-commit, in which you voted against your own…
STUPAK: Voted against my own language. In the motion to re-commit…yes because I feel that we have adequately—more than adequately protected life, the sanctity of life especially with the executive order, the colloquy on the floor. And as I said on the floor, the right to life groups applauded George Bush in 2007 when he did his executive order, and now we did our executive order, suddenly its not good enough? I believe some groups politicize life. As I said in my motion , when I spoke against the motion[to recommit], ‘let’s not politicize life.” Let’s prioritize life, and that’s what we did in this legislation and the executive order.
PICKET: There’s an idea out there, that essentially, no matter what, you were going to put the health care bill over the abortion issue.
STUPAK: I don’t think that’s true. My statements…
PICKET:…giving political cover for the bill as well for yourself though the executive order. What do you have to say to that?
STUPAK: With this whole debate for the last year, all my motives have been questioned, and I’m sure they’ll be questioned from now until the end of my days. Whether its my personal integrity, where I live, my Catholic faith, everyone is questioning it, and I just think that people should look and see what we did—protected life, stayed true to our principles, and got health care passed.
PICKET: Do you believe in the primacy of the Pope over in Rome?
STUPAK: Do I believe in the primacy…can you explain that to me?
PICKET: Well considering the Vatican have in terms of the Catholic religion…
STUPAK: The Pope and the Catholic faith does not control Catholic legislators. We must vote reflective of our districts and our beliefs. When I vote pro-life, it happens to be my own personal belief, also my district’s beliefs and the nation's. As the polls show 61 percent of the American people believe we should not use public funds to pay for abortion. I agree with that.

The Orthodox Leader Leadership: Is the microphone on? (From an Orthodox Priest)

From a priest of the Orthodox Church in America, posted at his blog "The Orthodox Leader":

By Fr Basil Biberdorf

The recent turmoil surrounding the recent passage of healthcare legislation by the United States Congress is providing ample opportunity to look at the absence of Orthodox leadership. As a reminder, this blog’s purpose is not political. To the extent this legislation reflects Caesar’s affairs, it is generally best for the Church to remain silent.

Sadly, though, this legislation is not purely about political matters, for it has provisions for using taxes gathered from individuals, including Christians, to pay for elective abortions in all or part (c.f., here and here). Despite the scandalously equivocal language used by the Ecumenical Patriarch in discussing abortion (c.f., here, here, here, and here),  the Church’s teaching cannot be misunderstood. As a best example, consider St. Basil the Great (AD 330-379), who says absolutely nothing new: “Women also who administer drugs to cause abortion, as well as those who take poisons to destroy unborn children, are murderesses” (Letter 188).

Children in the womb are human beings, and their willful destruction is murder. So what about all those who will now find themselves accessories to the crime through the new legal requirement to fund abortion?

In the face of this legislation, this question, and the evil that is elective abortion, the silence from our Orthodox leaders is deafening. Goarch.org? Oca.org? Antiochian.org? ROCOR? The Serbian Church in America? SCOBA? Nothing. We are justified in wailing with grief over more than 250,000 dead in Haiti, yet over 1.2 million elective abortions are performed each year in the United States alone. All is now set to begin funding them with tax dollars, and no official word of protest or exhortation is to be found.

Worse, at least one professor at Holy Cross Seminary is reportedly elated at the passing of this legislation, and I am nearly certain he has company among the faculty at St. Vladimir’s. Is it any wonder, then, that our parishes have so many individuals – often lifelong Orthodox Christians – who think abortion is no big deal? Is it any wonder that many of our parish clergy are indifferent to (if not supportive of) abortion? If the shepherds won’t wield their staves to drive away wolves wearing power suits and lab coats, aided by the Internal Revenue Service, who will? If they won’t, who can reasonably be expected to?

To those bishops (especially those whom I have overlooked) and my brethren who are speaking against the wanton destruction of these little ones by means of tax subsidies in the name of health care, I thank you and pray that your efforts would yield much fruit by strengthening and encouraging the Orthodox faithful to stand firm. To the others, the bigger lambs need someone to feed them (Jn 21:14-19), and the littlest ones need someone to speak in their defense. Who will do it?

Photo: "... but for a pen."

by Thomas Peters on March 23rd, 2010

Today, President Obama signed his health care bill into law, using 20 separate pens to write his name.

The last pen he used, reports Daniel Foster, will be given to Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association.
Sr. Keehan, as most of you know, was a staunch ally of the Democrat efforts to push through their health care reform. She issued press releases on behalf of her organization asking representatives in Congress to pass the legislation, even without including abortion funding fixes (which they did). She met with Obama personally several days before the final vote in Congress, she contacted individual congressmen and assuaged their conscience that they could vote for the bill as-is, etc.

Words You Won't Hear From the Medjugorje "Gospa"

"Satan can even clothe himself in a cloak of humility, but he does not know how to wear the cloak of obedience." (Saint Faustina Kowalska, Diary, par. 939)

"Blessed Virgin, Mother of Christ and of us, intercede for peace in this restless region of the Church, in the diocese of Mostar, intercede especially for this place, for this parish, where innumerable times your blessed name was mentioned in words which were not yours. Make them stop fabricating messages in your name. Accept, Blessed Virgin, satisfaction through the sincere prayers of the devout souls who have no part in fanaticism and disobedience to the Church. Dear Madonna, humble and obedient servant of God, let the faithful of Medjugorje follow with their firm steps the shepherd of the local Church so that all of us might together glorify and praise you in truth and love.
Amen!" - Homily of Bishop Pavao Zanic on Medjugorje

Attorneys General in 11 States Poised to Challenge Healthcare Bill

By Warren Richey, Staff writer / March 22, 2010

Attorneys general from at least 11 states say they will challenge the constitutionality of the healthcare reform bill passed by the House of Representatives Sunday night.

The threatened action suggests the controversial measure is about to move from the legislative realm into what could become a protracted and messy fight in the courts. The attorneys general say they will sue once President Obama signs the bill into law. They are pledging to take their battle all the way to the US Supreme Court.

“The health care legislation Congress passed tonight is an assault against the Constitution,” said South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster. “A legal challenge by the states appears to be the only hope of protecting the American people from this unprecedented attack on our system of government,” he said in a statement.

Limbaugh: Stupak = Neville Chamberlain

"But I'm going to tell everybody in the Republican Party that's running around talking about repeal: It had better be more than a campaign slogan. You better mean it. Don't declare something as principle and then play it like a $5 poker chip like Bart Stupak did. Stupak has humiliated and disgraced himself. He lied because he held out the hope to millions of Americans that this travesty would not happen. Bart Stupak has not only humiliated and disgraced himself; he has as big a role in destroying this country as it was founded as Barack Obama does. Last night, Bart Stupak damaged the already crippled Democrat Party more than he knows, more than they know. That executive order? Totally laughable. Stupak just wanted his "Notice me!" moment. Stupak is no different than Neville Chamberlain, who came back with that little letter from Hitler, "Oh, yeah, Hitler says no war between his country and ours."

Churchill said, "Well, you're a fool."

Catholic sex abuse scandal: time to sack trendy bishops and restore the faith

By Gerald Warner

It has become fashionable to claim that the sex abuse scandal currently afflicting the Catholic Church is “its biggest crisis since the Reformation”. Oh, really? Tell me about it. The abuse issue is just a small part of the much larger crisis that has engulfed the Church since the Second Vatican Catastrophe and which is more serious than the Reformation.

Abolish clerical celibacy? The last thing a priest abusing altar boys needs or wants is a wife. There is no compulsory celibacy in the Church of England, but that has not prevented vicars and boy scouts furnishing gratifying amounts of copy to the tabloid Sunday papers for the past century. Celibacy goes against the grain of today’s “unrepressed”, “non-judgemental”, let-it-all-hang-out attitude to sex; its continued existence is a reproach to the hedonist Western world; so Rome must be persuaded to abolish it – likewise its condemnation of divorce, abortion, contraception, homosexuality and all the other fetishes of liberal society. Dream on, secularists.

“Irish abuse victims disappointed by Pope’s letter.” Of course they are. They were disappointed by it before they had read it, before it was even written. Any other response would diminish the power they find themselves wielding against the Church. Have they a legitimate grievance? In most cases, yes. They have a ferocious grievance against the “filth” (Benedict XVI’s term, long before he came under public pressure) who defiled them and treated them like animals.

How could clergy transgress so gravely against the doctrines of the Church? What doctrines? These offences took place in the wake of Vatican II, when doctrines were being thrown out like so much lumber. These offenders were the children of Paul VI and “aggiornamento”. Once you have debauched the Mystical Body of Christ, defiling altar boys comes easily.

The “neglected” sacraments and devotional practices that the Pope says could have prevented this did not just wither on the vine: they were actively discouraged by bishops and priests. In the period when this abuse was rampant, there was just one mortal sin in the Catholic Church: daring to celebrate or attend the Latin Tridentine Mass. A priest raping altar boys would be moved to another parish; as for a priest who had the temerity to celebrate the Old Mass – his feet would not touch the ground.

There was a determined resolve among the bishops to deny any meaningful catechesis to the young. That is the generation, wholly ignorant of the faith, that in Ireland achieved material prosperity in the “Celtic Tiger” economy. Initially it still attended Mass (or what passed for Mass) out of social conformity. Then the sex abuse scandal gave Irish post-Vatican II agnostics the perfect pretext for apostasy: tens of thousands who had never been abused, nor met anybody who had, found an excuse to stay in bed on Sunday mornings.

The abusive priests are not the only hypocrites. “I am so shocked by the abuse scandal I am leaving the Church.” Right. So, the fact that some degenerates who should never have been ordained violated young people – in itself a deplorable sin – means that the Son of God did not come down to earth, redeem mankind on the cross and found the Church? This appalling scandal no more compromises the truths of the Faith than the career of Alexander VI or any other corrupt Renaissance Pope.

Should bishops be forced to resign? Oh yes – approximately 95 per cent of them worldwide. These clowns in their pseudo-ethnic mitres and polyester vestments with faux-naïve Christian symbols, spouting their ecumaniac episcobabble, have presided over more than sexual abuse: they have all but extinguished the Catholic faith with their modernist fatuities. They should be retired to monasteries to spend their remaining years considering how to account to their Maker for a failed stewardship that has lost countless millions of souls.

Benedict XVI should take advantage of a popular wave of revulsion against the failed episcopate to sack every 1960s flared-trousered hippy who is obstructing Summorum Pontificum. It is a unique opportunity to cull the hireling shepherds and clear away the dead wood of the Second Vatican Catastrophe. It is time to stop the apologies and reinstate apologetics; to rebuild all that has been destroyed in the past 40 years; to square up to liberals and secularists as so many generations of Catholics did in the past; to proclaim again the immutable truths of the One True Church that, in the glory of the Resurrection, can have no legitimate posture other than triumphalism.

Vatican will have Russian embassy

Moscow, March 22, Interfax - The Russian Federation embassy in the Vatican will be given the status of an embassy in line with instructions signed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin last Saturday.

The decision was made after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Vatican.

On December 4, 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on the establishment of diplomatic relations and issued instructions "to duly document the understandings reached."

Dissent over Church Closings in the Diocese of Cleveland

 From WCPN:
"At the end of a typical Sunday mass at St. Cecilia church on Cleveland’s east side, traditional ritual gives way to spontaneity as members of the congregation drift from their pews and begin to embrace each other.  This mix of people of diverse ages and racial backgrounds, seemingly recharged by the past hour of prayer and fellowship, makes Christie Okocha smile.

CHRISTIE OKOCHA: I love it absolutely.  There’s such a sense of community.  It’s so relaxed, people are so loving, so accepting.  And the priest is absolutely the best.

DAN BEGIN: For some of these people, the sign of peace hug is only time they will be touched all week long..."
[You wouldn't know it from looking at the photos, but Dan and Bob are pastors.]
"By contrast, his brother Dan chose not to appeal the Bishop’s decree…but, he’s found a different way to maintain his east side parish community.

BOB BEGIN: He’s keeping it together on the internet, and he’s expanding it.  And they won’t need a building, so they’ll have no overhead.  It’s a great experiment.

Dan Begin’s experiment is called “Scattered Seed” --- based around a social networking site for parishioners --- sort of a spiritual Facebook, that will keep members in touch with each other."
And a recent open letter from Fr. Bob to his Bishop, published in the Cleveland Leader:
"Our priests have been publicly silent. Many of our priests know that thousands of good and loyal people are suffering injury, hurt and an ensuing anger not unlike the anger Jesus himself felt when he confronted the misuse of authority by the leaders of his time. Many priests are hurting as well. Many are angry. Morale is not good...
I suggested that in justice, when any central government, for its own perceived benefit, decides that it is necessary to abridge the rights of its member institutions, it is bound in justice to have well-researched and compelling reasons....

In our analogy, you are the central government and the parishes and institutions of the Diocese are the member institutions.....
Last week, I received a letter from you announcing that you now wish to launch a capital campaign, using the priests of the Diocese to solicit more than one hundred million dollars. The stated hope is that by allowing pastors to keep 30% of the money they raise in their own parishes and the promise that some of the money will help shore up their pension fund, they will cooperate in this effort.
You should know that unless and until the injustices and perceived injustices that have occurred in the last year are addressed adequately and publicly, I believe that such a campaign will be perceived by many as adding insult to the injury..." -- more
And a response from the diocese in the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
"Diocese spokesman Robert Tayek said Friday that he read a copy of the letter, sent electronically to him by Begin. However, Tayek said the bishop had not seen it.

"Father Begin's opinion is just that, one man's opinion," said Tayek. "We are not about to engage in a public debate between the bishop and one of his priests. The bishop's door is always open to his priests."

Begin's four-page letter comes one year after Lennon announced the closings of 52 churches in the eight-county diocese, saying the downsizing is due to shortages of priests, collection-basket cash and congregates. The bishop later reversed himself and allowed St. Colman and St. Ignatius of Antioch to remain open...

Tayek disagreed that morale among priests is low.

"I don't believe Father Begin was present when the bishop met just recently with more than 230 priests of the diocese," he said. "Father Begin's observations would be best described as purely speculative." - more

More negative consequences for Rep. Bart Stupak, D-MI, flowing from his agreeing to support Obamacare tonight following President Obama's issuance of an Executive Order allegedly insuring that no federal funds will be used to pay for abortions.

"This Wednesday night is our third annual Campaign for Life Gala, where we were planning to honor Congressman Stupak for his efforts to keep abortion-funding out of health care reform- we will no longer be doing so," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List Fund.
"By accepting this deal from the most pro-abortion President in American history, Stupak has not only failed to stand strong for unborn children, but also for his constituents and pro-life voters across the country," she said.

"Let me be clear: any representative, including Rep. Stupak, who votes for this healthcare bill can no longer call themselves 'pro-life.' The Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund will not endorse, or support in any capacity, any Member of Congress who votes for this bill in any future election," Dannenfelser said.
For these Members, it will be a quick downhill slide to defeat in November," she said.

The problem is simple, according to Dannenfelser: "The executive order on abortion funding does absolutely nothing to fix the problems presented by the health care reform bill that the House will vote on this evening. The very idea should offend all pro-life Members of Congress. An executive order can be rescinded at any time at the President's whim, and the courts could and have a history of trumping executive orders. Most importantly, pro-abortion Representatives have admitted the executive order is meaningless..."

    The Great Heresies

From Christianity’s beginnings, the Church has been attacked by those introducing false teachings, or heresies.

(Catholic Answers) The Bible warned us this would happen. Paul told his young protégé, Timothy, "For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths" (2 Tim. 4:3–4).

    What Is Heresy?

Heresy is an emotionally loaded term that is often misused. It is not the same thing as incredulity, schism, apostasy, or other sins against faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and Catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him" (CCC 2089).

To commit heresy, one must refuse to be corrected. A person who is ready to be corrected or who is unaware that what he has been saying is against Church teaching is not a heretic.
A person must be baptized to commit heresy. This means that movements that have split off from or been influenced by Christianity, but that do not practice baptism (or do not practice valid baptism), are not heresies, but separate religions. Examples include Muslims, who do not practice baptism, and Jehovah's Witnesses, who do not practice valid baptism.

Finally, the doubt or denial involved in heresy must concern a matter that has been revealed by God and solemnly defined by the Church (for example, the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the sacrifice of the Mass, the pope's infallibility, or the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary).

It is important to distinguish heresy from schism and apostasy. In schism, one separates from the Catholic Church without repudiating a defined doctrine. An example of a contemporary schism is the Society of St. Pius X—the "Lefebvrists" or followers of the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre—who separated from the Church in the late 1980s, but who have not denied Catholic doctrines. In apostasy, one totally repudiates the Christian faith and no longer even claims to be a Christian.

With this in mind, let's look at some of the major heresies of Church history and when they began.

    The Circumcisers (1st Century)

The Circumcision heresy may be summed up in the words of Acts 15:1: "But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brethren, 'Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.'"

Many of the early Christians were Jews, who brought to the Christian faith many of their former practices. They recognized in Jesus the Messiah predicted by the prophets and the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Because circumcision had been required in the Old Testament for membership in God's covenant, many thought it would also be required for membership in the New Covenant that Christ had come to inaugurate. They believed one must be circumcised and keep the Mosaic law to come to Christ. In other words, one had to become a Jew to become a Christian.

But God made it clear to Peter in Acts 10 that Gentiles are acceptable to God and may be baptized and become Christians without circumcision. The same teaching was vigorously defended by Paul in his epistles to the Romans and the Galatians—to areas where the Circumcision heresy had spread.

    Gnosticism (1st and 2nd Centuries)

"Matter is evil!" was the cry of the Gnostics. This idea was borrowed from certain Greek philosophers. It stood against Catholic teaching, not only because it contradicts Genesis 1:31 ("And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good") and other scriptures, but because it denies the Incarnation. If matter is evil, then Jesus Christ could not be true God and true man, for Christ is in no way evil. Thus many Gnostics denied the Incarnation, claiming that Christ only appeared to be a man, but that his humanity was an illusion. Some Gnostics, recognizing that the Old Testament taught that God created matter, claimed that the God of the Jews was an evil deity who was distinct from the New Testament God of Jesus Christ. They also proposed belief in many divine beings, known as "aeons," who mediated between man and the ultimate, unreachable God. The lowest of these aeons, the one who had contact with men, was supposed to be Jesus Christ.

    Montanism (Late 2nd Century)

Montanus began his career innocently enough through preaching a return to penance and fervor. His movement also emphasized the continuance of miraculous gifts, such as speaking in tongues and prophecy. However, he also claimed that his teachings were above those of the Church, and soon he began to teach Christ's imminent return in his home town in Phrygia. There were also statements that Montanus himself either was, or at least specially spoke for, the Paraclete that Jesus had promised would come (in reality, the Holy Spirit).

    Sabellianism (Early 3rd Century)

The Sabellianists taught that Jesus Christ and God the Father were not distinct persons, but two.aspects or offices of one person. According to them, the three persons of the Trinity exist only in God's relation to man, not in objective reality.

    Arianism (4th Century)

Arius taught that Christ was a creature made by God. By disguising his heresy using orthodox or near-orthodox terminology, he was able to sow great confusion in the Church. He was able to muster the support of many bishops, while others excommunicated him.
Arianism was solemnly condemned in 325 at the First Council of Nicaea, which defined the divinity of Christ, and in 381 at the First Council of Constantinople, which defined the divinity of the Holy Spirit. These two councils gave us the Nicene creed, which Catholics recite at Mass every Sunday.

    Pelagianism (5th Century)

Pelagius denied that we inherit original sin from Adam's sin in the Garden and claimed that we become sinful only through the bad example of the sinful community into which we are born. Conversely, he denied that we inherit righteousness as a result of Christ's death on the cross and said that we become personally righteous by instruction and imitation in the Christian community, following the example of Christ. Pelagius stated that man is born morally neutral and can achieve heaven under his own powers. According to him, God's grace is not truly necessary, but merely makes easier an otherwise difficult task.

    Semi-Pelagianism (5th Century)

After Augustine refuted the teachings of Pelagius, some tried a modified version of his system. This, too, ended in heresy by claiming that humans can reach out to God under their own power, without God's grace; that once a person has entered a state of grace, one can retain it through one's efforts, without further grace from God; and that natural human effort alone can give one some claim to receiving grace, though not strictly merit it.

    Nestorianism (5th Century)

This heresy about the person of Christ was initiated by Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, who denied Mary the title of Theotokos (Greek: "God-bearer" or, less literally, "Mother of God"). Nestorius claimed that she only bore Christ's human nature in her womb, and proposed the alternative title Christotokos ("Christ-bearer" or "Mother of Christ").

Orthodox Catholic theologians recognized that Nestorius's theory would fracture Christ into two separate persons (one human and one divine, joined in a sort of loose unity), only one of whom was in her womb. The Church reacted in 431 with the Council of Ephesus, defining that Mary can be properly referred to as the Mother of God, not in the sense that she is older than God or the source of God, but in the sense that the person she carried in her womb was, in fact, God incarnate ("in the flesh").
There is some doubt whether Nestorius himself held the heresy his statements imply, and in this century, the Assyrian Church of the East, historically regarded as a Nestorian church, has signed a fully orthodox joint declaration on Christology with the Catholic Church and rejects Nestorianism. It is now in the process of coming into full ecclesial communion with the Catholic Church.

    Monophysitism (5th Century)

Monophysitism originated as a reaction to Nestorianism. The Monophysites (led by a man named Eutyches) were horrified by Nestorius's implication that Christ was two people with two different natures (human and divine). They went to the other extreme, claiming that Christ was one person with only one nature (a fusion of human and divine elements). They are thus known as Monophysites because of their claim that Christ had only one nature (Greek: mono = one; physis = nature).

Orthodox Catholic theologians recognized that Monophysitism was as bad as Nestorianism because it denied Christ's full humanity and full divinity. If Christ did not have a fully human nature, then he would not be fully human, and if he did not have a fully divine nature then he was not fully divine.

    Iconoclasm (7th and 8th Centuries)

This heresy arose when a group of people known as iconoclasts (literally, "icon smashers") appeared, who claimed that it was sinful to make pictures and statues of Christ and the saints, despite the fact that in the Bible, God had commanded the making of religious statues (Ex. 25:18–20; 1 Chr. 28:18–19), including symbolic representations of Christ (cf. Num. 21:8–9 with John 3:14).

    Catharism (11th Century)

Catharism was a complicated mix of non-Christian religions reworked with Christian terminology. The Cathars had many different sects; they had in common a teaching that the world was created by an evil deity (so matter was evil) and we must worship the good deity instead.

The Albigensians formed one of the largest Cathar sects. They taught that the spirit was created by God, and was good, while the body was created by an evil god, and the spirit must be freed from the body. Having children was one of the greatest evils, since it entailed imprisoning another "spirit" in flesh. Logically, marriage was forbidden, though fornication was permitted. Tremendous fasts and severe mortifications of all kinds were practiced, and their leaders went about in voluntary poverty.

    Protestantism (16th Century)

Protestant groups display a wide variety of different doctrines. However, virtually all claim to believe in the teachings of sola scriptura ("by Scripture alone"—the idea that we must use only the Bible when forming our theology) and sola fide ("by faith alone"—the idea that we are justified by faith only).
The great diversity of Protestant doctrines stems from the doctrine of private judgment, which denies the infallible authority of the Church and claims that each individual is to interpret Scripture for himself. This idea is rejected in 2 Peter 1:20, where we are told the first rule of Bible interpretation: "First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation." A significant feature of this heresy is the attempt to pit the Church "against" the Bible, denying that the magisterium has any infallible authority to teach and interpret Scripture.

The doctrine of private judgment has resulted in an enormous number of different denominations. According to The Christian Sourcebook, there are approximately 20-30,000 denominations, with 270 new ones being formed each year. Virtually all of these are Protestant.

    Jansenism (17th Century)

Jansenius, bishop of Ypres, France, initiated this heresy with a paper he wrote on Augustine, which redefined the doctrine of grace. Among other doctrines, his followers denied that Christ died for all men, but claimed that he died only for those who will be finally saved (the elect). This and other Jansenist errors were officially condemned by Pope Innocent X in 1653.

Heresies have been with us from the Church's beginning. They even have been started by Church leaders, who were then corrected by councils and popes. Fortunately, we have Christ's promise that heresies will never prevail against the Church, for he told Peter, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" (Matt. 16:18). The Church is truly, in Paul's words, "the pillar and foundation of the truth" (1 Tim. 3:15).

HLI Mourns Loss of Founder, Fr. Paul Marx

Front Royal, VA /Christian Newswire/ -- Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on March 20th of this year Fr. Paul Marx, OSB passed from this world into the Life that never ends--this is the hope that the whole pro-life movement nurtures in its heart for the one whom Pope John Paul II called "the Apostle of Life."

"In the more than forty-year pro-life career of Fr. Marx, and through his almost three million miles of world travel, Human Life International (HLI) saw the blossoming of the world's conscience about the issues of life," said Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, Fr. Marx's successor as president of HLI. "Father put pro-life 'on the map' in a literal sense and through his efforts gave the world direct and organized opposition to the culture of death."

Often referred to as "the father of the international pro-life movement", Fr. Marx visited all 50 states and 91 countries in his over 40 years of pro-life activism. Seeing the advance of anti-life forces before most did, he founded the Human Life Center in 1971, two years before Roe v. Wade. In 1981, the Human Life Center became Human Life International (HLI), the world's first and largest international pro-life organization. Fr. Marx was president of HLI until his retirement in 1999.

Father Marx authored over one dozen books, including The Death Peddlers: War on the Unborn (1971), Death Without Dignity: Killing for Mercy (1982), Confessions of a Pro-Life Missionary (1988), Fighting for Life (1989), The Flying Monk (1990), The Warehouse Priest (1993), and his autobiography, Faithful for Life (1997).

President Ronald Reagan once wrote in a personal letter to Fr. Marx, "You can be proud of all you've done to summon this Nation and others to reflection and positive action on issues affecting the sanctity of human life.  God bless you."

"We pray for the repose of his soul and for the strengthening of the spiritual children and pro-life family that Father leaves as a legacy in more than 100 countries" said Rev. Euteneuer.

Father Marx died just short of his 90th birthday. He liked to point out that he was born 10 days before the late Pope John Paul II, who once said to him, "You are doing the most important work on earth."

A Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Marx will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at St. John's Abbey.

Below is the full text of the statement of Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of HLI.

"Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on March the 20th of this year Fr. Paul Marx, OSB passed from this world into the Life that never ends -- at least that is the hope that the whole pro-life movement nurtures in its heart for the one whom Pope John Paul II called 'the Apostle of Life.'

"In the forty-year pro-life career of Fr. Marx, and through his three million miles of world travel, Human Life International saw the blossoming of the world's conscience about the issues of life. Father put pro-life 'on the map' in a literal sense and through his efforts gave the world direct and organized opposition to the culture of death. He will be missed dearly by all pro-lifers, especially those of us who had a chance to work intimately with him, and whose lives were changed irrevocably as a result.

"When that blessed day comes, when the fight for life is finally won, people will look back at this dark age of destruction and wonder who opposed the onslaught. Standing among the greatest champions for life will be Fr. Marx, not only for his own work, but for the work done by the countless other pro-life warriors he inspired."

"We pray for the repose of his soul and for the strengthening of the spiritual children and pro-life family that Father leaves as a legacy in more than 100 countries."

Medjugorje - The Actual Situation Today

    March, 2010

    By Mark Waterinckx

Both inside (and even outside) the Church, Medjugorje remains a “hot” item, with the divisions between believers and non-believers becoming ever larger. Believers tend to only see the “fruits of the tree” (Matt 7, 15-20): conversions, prayer groups, healings, vocations etc.

But let us read further in Matt, 7, 21-23 : 21
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'”
Non- believers tend to see especially the disobedience of the seers and of the Franciscans of Medjugorje, the rebellion against the bishops and the Pope, the fanaticism, the manipulations, lies, contradictions, the profiteering, the luxurious homes of the “seers”, the sex scandals of the Franciscans, the suspended Franciscan rebels involved in Medjugorje and their illegal sacraments.

Among the non- believers are people who have either been personally disillusioned with Medjugorje, with consequent suicides, divorces, psychiatric problems etc, or those who have read the many critical books and publications.

Among the believers two groups can be distinguished, the commercial and the not for profit. The commercial believers earn a great deal of money from their „goldmine”, e.g. the Franciscans of Medjugorje, the “seers”, the organizers of the pilgrimages, the sellers of videos, DVDs, books etc.

Among the not for profit believers are those who naively accept everything and who only read books, periodicals and websites which are pro Medjugorje and who thus can be considered to be misled by their ignorance.

With both groups there are many believers who display a marked degree of fanaticism and obsessiveness. Medjugorje has become their all encompassing dogma which overrides everything else. This fanaticism overrode all common sense, critical evaluation, intellectual honesty, prudence and friendship. This attitude can only be explained by the influence of the “diabolos”, the evil spirit, the malign entity which everywhere sows enmity and disunity.

In June 1981, when Fr Jozo Zovko had thoroughly interviewed all the “seers”, he told them “You have not seen Mary: there is no sign, there is no message. You can only have seen Satan.” Yet he refused to perform an exorcism when a Franciscan colleague proposed that. Later on, first he and then Tomislav Vlasic began to manipulate and direct the “messages”. In fact, Jozo proposed to the “seers” that they should let him formulate the answers of the “Gospa” to the questions of the villagers.

All this has been recorded and can be read in “Ces 10 jours qui ont fait Med.” by J.Bouflet and “ Understanding Medugorje.” by D.Foley. I possess about 100 pages of transcripts from these recordings.

Those who have the courage and honesty to present the truth are insulted by fanatical believers (I have a list of 100 insults addressed to me) and are often demonized and even threatened.

What is the position of the official Church?

All the local bishops, (Zanic and Peric) of Mostar and all the official commissions of investigation were uniformly negative: “non constat de supernaturalitate” (supernaturality is not demonstrated)

When bishop Zanic tried to convince Pope John Paul II to condemn Medjugorje, the Pope was influenced by the Marialogue René Laurentin, by US president Reagan (who supported the Polish Solidarnosc and who was in contact with Marija Pavlovic), by Sister Emmanuel, bishop Hnilica and promoters of the Charismatic movement. However, as a phenomenologue the Pope was mainly interested in the positive outcomes of Medjugorje and no papal intervention was achieved.

On 27 June 1991, when the bishops conference of Yugoslavia was about to issue a strong condemnation of Medjugorje, the civil war in Yugoslavia broke out the day before. Indeed, on April 10, 1991 the declaration of Zadar announced clear pastoral guidelines which had been prepared by a special liturgical-pastoral committee on June 17, 1991. I possess the English translation:
    1. The “seers” were ordered not to make any public declarations and to hand over their “messages “only to the local bishop and the competent committee.

    2. The parish priest of Medjugorje was ordered to ensure that no mention was made of “apparitions” or “messages” on public occasions or publications.

    3. The faithful were directed to accept the guidance of their bishop.
This committee consisted of four bishops and four theologians. The bishops were Komarica from Banja Luka as president, Stanbuk from Hvar, Puljic from Sarajevo and Zanic from Mostar. The theologians were two Franciscans and two diocesan priests. The meeting took place in the basement of the presbytery in Medjugorje. It was anticipated that these directives would be approved and presented ten days later in the general session of the Yugoslav bishops conference of June 27, 1991.

However, on June 25, 1991 Slovenia and Croatia declared themselves independent of the federal Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia and on June 26, 1991 the Serbian army first entered Slovenia and began the terrible civil war in Yugoslavia. At the same time, the State of Yugoslavia ceased to exist, and with it the Yugoslav bishops conference!

The general session of the bishops’ conference on June 27, 1991 therefore did not take place and the anticipated directives were therefore never published. It is in any case difficult to prohibit pilgrimages and prayers in a time of war. The “seers” of Medjugorje and the Franciscans continued to propagate their “messages” throughout the whole world. The war had saved Medjugorje!

In the meantime, the non recognized Medjugorje became world famous and was on the way to compete with such recognized apparition sites as Lourdes and Fatima.

What action did Pope John Paul II take? Officially nothing! According to some, he did speak privately about the positive fruits of Medjugorje. Perhaps he hoped in his heart that Medjugorje was real, but realized in his mind that it could not be genuine. In a private letter of July 22, 1998 Cardinal Ratzinger wrote that all the positive aspects of Medjugorje which had been attributed to him and the Pope by René Laurentin, bishop Hnilica, Sr. Emmanuel, etc. were “frei erfunden” (fantasies). De facto the Pope, a deeply pious and patient man, as well as a typical polish fervent believer in the veneration of Mary, allowed in good faith some dubious practices to continue.

After the death of this Pope, it fell to Cardinal Ratzinger, the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, now as Pope Benedict, to make some resolute but painful decisions. He severely punished Fr Gino Burresi (a false stigmatist from San Vittorino Romano) and also Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legionnaires of Christ. Fr Tomislav Vlasic of Medjugorje was suspended, laicized and dismissed from the Franciscan order. The rebellious Franciscans from Assisi were forced to obey their bishop. The prayer of the Lady of all Peoples of Amsterdam (which had imprimaturs from 70 bishops) was partially condemned (“who once was Mary”). Jozo Zovko was banned from Medjugorje. The Neo Catechumenate was reined in. The editor of the influential USA-magazine “America” was forced to resign etc etc. The list is far from complete.

This raises the question of why the present decisive Pope Benedict XVI has not yet condemned Medjugorje??? Perhaps it is because it might cause a schism? The Pope is trying to achieve closer ties with the Pius X fraternity of the late Archbishop Lefebvre, with the Orthodox Churches, with the Muslims, with the Jews etc.

Quite a number of Cardinals (think of the eccentric Schönborn of Vienna) and bishops have let themselves be persuaded by the manipulative siren song of Medjugorje, and this has caused a considerable amount of controversy in the Vatican. The problem of Medjugorje could and should have been solved long ago, but initially it was the influential Marialogue René Laurentin and later the civil war in Yugoslavia which saved Medjugorje from a boycott.

Medjugorje is Satan’s masterpiece in these confusing end times. He incites pious believers against the bishop of Mostar because he refuses to recognize their “sanctuary”. The danger is that if the Pope will not recognize Medjugorje, many such fanatical believers may turn against the Pope. In that way, the small herd of still pious believers may separate from Rome and become a de facto sect.

The late Fr Slavko Barbaric said it in this way: “We Franciscans want to remain here.” The resistance of the rebellious Franciscans is in fact a resistance against the papal decree “Romanis Pontificibus” of Pope Paul VI of 6-6-1975. This decree ordered that the Franciscans should leave 50% of the parishes to the diocesan priests of the diocese Mostar. The consequence of the decree was an open rebellion from a great many hot-headed Franciscans. These rebels against Rome were supported by the messages of the “Gospa”.

In this way, Medjugorje became a “deus ex machina” against Rome.

What has happened with the main manipulators of Medjugorje?

1°Fr Slavko Barbaric died on 24-11-2000 in disobedience on the Krizevac. Bishop Peric had forbidden him to live in Medjugorje. The next day he was “canonized” in a “message” from the Franciscan“Gospa”...

2°Fr Tomislav Vlasic is no longer a priest or a Franciscan

3°Fr Jozo Zovko has already been suspended three times and is now exiled from Medjugorje.

What has happened with the “seers”?

Milka Pavlovic and Ivan Ivankovic did not return to the apparition mountain of Podbrdo after only one apparition. The others all live in luxurious homes and lost their “vocation” and married. Some run their own hotel and work with American travel agencies.

What will the new Vatican investigation committee achieve? Let us hope it is able to combine genuine pastoral care for the millions of duped pilgrims with a true regard for the truth.

    PRESS RELEASE

Vatican City, Mar 17, 2010 / 09:56 am (CNA/EWTN News).- A statement was released by the Holy See on Wednesday confirming the formation of a commission to investigate the “phenomenon” of Medjugorje.

    The Vatican communiqué reads:

“Under the auspices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, under the presidency of Cardinal Camillo Ruini, an international commission of investigation on Medjugorje has been constituted. Said Commission, composed of cardinals, bishops and experts will work in a reserved manner, subjecting the results of their studies to the authority of the Dicastery.”

Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, said that no other information was available at this point besides the role of Cardinal Ruini as president. However, he did say that the commission will be formed by “more or less” 20 members.

Responding to a question from a journalist about the possible inclusion of Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar, whose diocese includes Medjugorje, Fr. Lombardi said that he is not in possession of a list of members.

The Vatican spokesman reviewed the history of investigations into the possible Marian apparitions of Medjugorje, noting that they began on a diocesan level. When it was seen that the “phenomenon was broader than the diocese,” it was passed on to the episcopal conference of the former Yugoslavia, which, he noted, no longer exists.

The commissions at those levels never came to a conclusion on the question of whether or not the alleged apparitions are supernatural, so the bishops of Bosnia and Herzegovina have asked the CDF to take over investigations, the Vatican spokesman explained.

As the commission carries out their activities, Fr. Lombardi continued, they will decide whether or not to communicate information regarding their findings. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that it will be a “very discreet” project “given the sensitivity of the subject,” he remarked.

Speaking in Italian, he said to expect that investigations will take “a good while” to reach their completion and emphasized that the results of the commission’s activities will be submitted to the CDF, under whose mandate they are operating. The commission will only offer their technical findings to the Congregation, which in turn will “make decisions on the case.”

For now, the composition of the commission is “reserved,” as is the method they will pursue in their investigations, Fr. Lombardi said in closing.
