CDF demands explanation from Cardinal Christoph Schonborn

Austrian daily Der Standard reports that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has asked the Cardinal of Vienna to explain himself regarding his decision to reverse the decision of Father Gerhard Swierzek, parish priest in Stützenhofen, who had blocked the presence of a young man living in a registered homosexual "union" as a member of the local Parish Council (see the first and second posts on the matter):

Der Standard has learned from well-informed Vatican sources that the Archbishop of Vienna was invited by letter to explain his position [on this matter]. In case of non-response, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith will call up the Cardinal in his next visit to Rome.

Right. As a member of the full Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith himself, the Cardinal must be extremely fearful...

A Life Site News article tells us that, since Cardinal Schönborn reversed himself and sided with the homosexual man whom a parish priest had said could not serve on the Parish Council, the priest involved has asked for another assignment (all emphases mine):

Coming only a few days after Easter, the resignation of Father Gerhard Swierzek, the pastor of a parish in the Archdiocese of Vienna, has been hailed by homosexualist activists in the Catholic Church as a victory. Fr. Swierzek had refused to allow an active homosexual, Florian Stangl, who is living in a legal registered partnership with another man, to sit on the parish council in the town of Stützenhofen.

A victory for the homosexualist activists? You bet it’s a victory. And it’s a scandal for the faithful – a scandal perpetrated by a cardinal archbishop. It’s a scandal perpetrated by a cardinal archbishop whose name is closely associated with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  Cardinal Schönborn just gave the stamp of approval to homosexual unions. 

[Side note: Cardinal Schönborn also authored the “Youcat” (Youth Catechism), which has been criticized for its weak presentation on the sinfulness of homosexuality. Coincidence?]

Look, I'm not saying these things to be mean or disrespectful to the Cardinal. I'm saying them because I'm scandalized, too - and angry that a Cardinal, a Prince of the Church, would lead the faithful astray in this way, and fail to offer some correction to the homosexual men. Doesn't he care about their souls?... (continued)

Overruling one of his parish priests, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna has permitted a homosexual in a registered domestic partnership to serve on a parish council. Father Gerhard Swierzek, the parish priest of a small parish in the archdiocese, had refused to allow Florian Stangl, 26, to serve on the council.... Cardinal Schönborn said that he had initially intended to uphold the priest's decisionbut then, he said, 'I ask myself in these situations: How did Jesus act? He first saw the human being.' Calling his decision 'a decision for human beings,' the cardinal recounted that he invited Stangl and his partner to lunch and understood 'why the community had given him the most votes, because he is really impressive.'

I asked Father Richard Perozich, a priest of the Diocese of San Diego, to comment on the above story.

Father responded, "Unfortunately, this action [on the part of Cardinal Schönborn] will validate homosexual behavior for that local church against Christ's teachings."

He added:

"Catholics who are in a sexual relationship outside of marriage ... scandalize the faithful and lead them away from Jesus. Repentance, [in this case] turning away from homosexual behavior first in a public way since a domestic partnership has been established, is the first step. Conversion to Jesus by decrying old behavior and public promise of chastity is the second step. Repairing the damage through life-long counsel to others with homosexual attraction to live chastely is the third step..."
