New English Missal Translation Nears Completion

Vatican, Jan. 11, 2008 (CWNews.com) - A new English-language version of the Roman Missal is nearing completion, the Congregation for Divine Worship has announced. But the Vatican's timetable suggests that the text will not be available until late this year, at the earliest.

The Vox Clara Committee, which was set up by the Vatican in 2001 to supervise the translation of liturgical texts into English, met in December to review the latest draft translations. A Vatican report indicated that these drafts would be reviewed by the episcopal conferences of English-speaking nations "in the coming months," and then a final draft of the Missal could be prepared.

After the final draft is prepared under the direction of the Vox Clara committee, it will be submitted to the Congregation for Divine Worship for final approval.

The Vox Clara Committee, chaired by Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia, is scheduled to meet again in September 2008. Thus even if the existing drafts win prompt approval from all the English-speaking bishops' conferences and the Vox Clara committee quickly passes the text along for an official recognitio, that final approval probably would not come before the end of the year.
