Governor Jan Brewer endorses Donald Trump

By Kristen East

(Politico) Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Saturday endorsed Donald Trump for president.
Trump has made immigration a central issue in his campaign for president, vowing to build a wall along the southern border of the United States and promising to have Mexico pay for it.

"For years I pleaded with the federal government to do their job and secure our border. Today, we can elect a President who will do just that — Donald J. Trump," Brewer said in a statement released by Trump's campaign.

Brewer, 71, was governor of Arizona from 2009-2015. Her endorsement follows those of Maine Gov. Paul LePage and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie this week.

Phoenix police confirm arrest in priest murder

The Republic | azcentral.com

Phoenix police confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Father Kenneth Walker, a Phoenix police spokesman said Monday morning via social media.

A Phoenix police spokesman confirmed that investigators arrested a 54-year-old man with a history of aggravated assault and misconduct involving weapons on suspicion of killing the 28-year-old priest found dead in a rectory near downtown Phoenix last week.

The spokesman confirmed the arrest of Gary Michael Moran hours before Valley residents honored Walker with a requiem Mass.

Moran was released from prison in April after having served the majority of a 10-year sentence for burglary and aggravated assault, according to court records.

Walker was murdered late Wednesday night in the rectory of a Catholic parish west of downtown Phoenix.

Phoenix police collected physical evidence from the Catholic church Walker was killed and another critically injured Wednesday night, but investigators spent the weekend developing more information about the crimes.

Walker, 28, was shot and killed and Father Joseph Terra, 56, was wounded at a Catholic church Wednesday night near the state Capitol, a Phoenix police spokesman said.

Priest killed, another one injured in attack at Catholic church in Phoenix

By Mariano Castillo and Faith Karimi, CNN

(CNN) -- A priest was killed and another critically wounded in an attack at a Catholic church in Phoenix, police said early Thursday.

The Rev. Kenneth Walker was fatally shot, and the Rev. Joseph Terra is hospitalized in critical condition, police and church officials said. It was not clear what type of weapon was used to attack Terra, Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department said.

A 911 call came in about 9 p.m. Wednesday (12 a.m. ET Thursday) from the Mater Misericordiae (Mother of Mercy) Mission Catholic Church, Martos said.

The emergency call to police was for a burglary and was made by Terra, Martos said. It was unclear if Terra made the phone call before or after he was injured.

When police arrived, they found the two priests badly injured. Walker died at the hospital.

Terra, the injured priest, was only able to minimally speak with authorities about what happened, Martos said. The priority is for him to be treated.

"Hopefully, once that individual receives treatment and is able to pull through, we can gather more information," Martos said.

The church, in a statement on its website, referred to more than one armed burglar breaking into and entering the property. Police have not confirmed or denied that assertion, saying only that it is not an official police statement.

A green 2003 Mazda Tribute was stolen from church property, police said, and it was found abandoned.

The vehicle is being examined for clues, but as of Thursday morning, nothing significant had been found, Martos said.

"The police are still gathering information and trying to sort through the details of this senseless act of violence," the Diocese of Phoenix said in a statement. "We ask that people offer prayers for both priests, the religious community, their families and the parish."

Investigators have gathered physical evidence at the crime scene, but they lack witness information, police said. Authorities asked for anyone with information to call in tips to police.

Walker, 29, was a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, a small community of priests founded in 1988 and dedicated to reviving the traditional Latin Mass. Terra, 56, is also a member.

A Catholic blog, Rorate Caeli, said Walker was born in upstate New York in a family that became intrigued by the traditional Latin Mass. He was ordained as a priest two years ago.

The blog described the area around the church in downtown Phoenix as "deserted and dangerous at night" but asked followers to avoid speculation about a motive for the crime. It suggested prayer instead.

"May justice be done," the blog said.

Mel Gibson 'saves group from snake attack'

Mel Gibson(Belfast Telegraph) Mel Gibson reportedly saved a group of people from a deadly snake while on a cleansing retreat...

He recently spent some time at the Miraval Resort & Spa in Arizona, which is when the incident occurred.

"Mel was on a cleansing retreat? and was on a five-mile hike into the desert mountains with eight other guests when he suddenly heard an ominous rattle he knew well as a long-time resident of the Malibu mountains! A split second later, a huge rattlesnake slithered onto the trail and went into attack mode. Instantly, Mel shielded three women next to him with his body, yelling, 'Stay back!'" a source told National Enquirer.

The serpent was six feet long and Mel's companions were reportedly frozen with fear. One managed to hand the actor a tree branch, which he used to fend off the snake.

"Mel charged the rattlesnake, yelling at the top of his lungs, and beat it back off the trail. Then he stood guard, keeping the snake at bay while everyone moved quickly past the danger point," the source added. "When all were safely distant, the group gave Mel a rousing cheer."

Former CIA Officer's Congress bid fueled by her Catholic faith

By Benjamin Mann

.- Leah Campos Schandlbauer, a Catholic mother of four, hopes to represent Arizona in the U.S. Congress, after serving the country for over 10 years as an international agent in the CIA.

“The most accurate way of describing it is by my professional title – which was 'Operations Officer' in the National Clandestine Service,” Schandlbauer told CNA on June 13. “But we are otherwise known as 'spies.'”

In the “fiercely patriotic” state of Arizona, the aspiring Republican candidate for the newly-formed Ninth District says she gets plenty of positive feedback about her background with the foreign intelligence agency.
“They're really grateful for my service – which is humbling to me,” she said.

Schandlbauer left her CIA position six months ago, as her husband Alfred prepared for a one-year deployment in Afghanistan. The Catholic couple prayed extensively over Leah's decision to seek political office.

On August 28, she will contend for the Republican nomination, as one of seven choices in the party's primary election. The choice, she said, was heavily influenced by her time as an officer in Western Europe and Latin America, which left her concerned for her own country's future.

“A lot of the rhetoric that I heard coming out of Washington sounded a lot like what we were hearing from the likes of Hugo Chavez – really divisive, 'class warfare' type rhetoric.”

“In countries like Argentina and Venezuela, the government divides the people along the lines of class, race, and other categories,” she noted. “They kill the unity of the people. It's very manipulative of the government, for political gain, to control the discourse and pit people against each other.”

“I see that happening here now, and it is frightening.”

She also notes that the “cautionary tale” of Europe's cultural and financial crisis “is ours to learn from, or be the next victims.”

“I was there,” she recalled, “and I saw a lot of the false promises that come out of a statist, European-style 'social democracy.'”

A lifelong Catholic, Schandlbauer learned her faith partly from her mother, who teaches as a catechist. Leah's sister, Rachel Campos-Duffy, is a Catholic author and blogger.

The political hopeful's Catholic faith has shaped her own pro-life and pro-family positions, as well as her advocacy of free-market economics. Following the Catholic free-enterprise proponent Arthur Brooks, she sees property rights and personal initiative as safeguarding human happiness and dignity.

“As Christians, we celebrate the notion of freedom,” she said. “This election year is about us making a full-fledged defense of freedom. I think that is an obligation for us, as Christians.”

Schandlbauer is also a critic of President Obama's approach to religious groups, particularly the “horrible situation that Obama gave us with the HHS (contraception) mandate.” Religious freedom, she said, is in “crisis” because of the mandate.

But she believes the crisis may also be “a great opportunity.” As controversy grows over the contraception mandate, Schandlbauer sees “a lot of unity among Catholics in America on this issue.”

This show of public unity on the Church's part, she said, is “such a beautiful thing. And I hope it's a taste of what's to come.”

Toughen Up Mitt-ercup

By Michele Malkin
Call the waaaaahmbulance. Mitt Romney is railing against Rick Santorum for robocalls calling attention to his TARP bailout support/auto bailout flip-flop.

Romney is decrying the robocalls aimed at Democrats as “outrageous” and “disgusting” and a “terrible dirty trick.”

Today’s Michigan primary is an open primary.

Inconvenient truth: There’s nothing “dirty” and there’s no “trick” in playing by the rules set by the states. Seventeen states have open primaries. (Think the rules should be changed? Go for it. But not in the middle of the game.) One of those 17 states with open primaries is Massachusetts. And among the many voters who have crossed over to influence the outcome of an open primary is…Mitt Romney.
The Romney campaign has been denouncing Democratic efforts – and now those by Rick Santorum – to get Democrats to vote in Michigan’s open primary.
Mitt Romney himself called it a “new low” in politics in a round of TV interviews.
“President Obama’s reelection team is now actively engaged in changing the outcome of the Republican primary,” declared Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades in an email to the campaign’s list. “This is politics at its worst. It doesn’t get much more pathetic.”
Yet Romney himself gave a similar explanation in his last presidential run for why he crossover voted in in the 1990s in Massachusetts, per this ABC News clip:
ABC News’ Jonathan Greenberger Reports: Republican presidential candididate Mitt Romney offered a new explanation today for why he supported a Democrat in 1992.
That year, Romney, then a registered independent, voted for former Sen. Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary. He told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, in an interview that will air Sunday on “This Week,” that his vote was meant as a tactical maneuver aimed at finding the weakest opponent for incumbent President George H.W. Bush.
“In Massachusetts, if you register as an independent, you can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary,” said Romney, who until he made an unsuccessful run for Senate in 1994 had spent his adult life as a registered independent. “When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I’d vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for the Republican.”
Well, this year, there’s a “real contest” in the “Republican primary” and Rick Santorum is fighting for every vote — as any candidate intent on winning should.

Mitt Romney’s longtime argument is that he, not Santorum, is best equipped to appeal to the very Reagan Democrats that Rick Santorum is wooing.

Yet, in the state he considers his “home state” and where he has desperately outspent Santorum by 3-to-1, tonight’s outcome is “too close to call.”

If Romney can’t put away Santorum and can’t handle a run-of-the-mill robocall, how is he going to handle Team Obama’s Chicago goons and the Democrat deacons of truly dirty tricks?
